Newark, NJ (January, 2013)— Celebrity Chef, Jamie Geller will be the head judge and guest of honor for the 2013 Man-O-Manischewitz® Cook-Off Contest, the seventh year of this now iconic national competition.   Five finalists will compete live on March 21st at the Manischewitz Headquarters and Manufacturing Facilities in Newark, NJ for the $25,000 Grand Prize, which includes a series of Maytag® appliances, cash and a beautiful crystal trophy.  The competition takes place in front of an esteemed panel of judges led by Joy of Kosher with Jamie Geller magazine and website founder, Jamie Geller and includes other food media and experts. Mayor Corey Booker has proclaimed the day as “Manischewitz Cook-Off Day.”

 

In addition to being selected as Head Judge at the Cook-Off, Jamie Geller has many other roles; mother of 5, founder of The Kosher Media Network which publishes the Kosher cooking print magazine Joy of Kosher with Jamie Geller and companion website JoyofKosher.com, TV personality and author of 2 bestselling cookbooks with a 3rd set for a September 2013 debut.  She is often dubbed as “Queen of Kosher.”

 

The competition encourages at-home chefs to experiment with kosher products while preparing delicious recipes that could be a new family favorite or one that has been shared from generation to generation.  The deadline for entries is February 4, 2013.  The Cook-Off is designed to showcase the benefits of using kosher products as part of the home cooking experience and to think about using kosher products in other types of cuisine. Recipes must include one of the Manischewitz All-Natural broth flavors-NEW Turkey, Chicken, Reduced Sodium Chicken, Beef or Vegetable, as well as one other Manischewitz products as well, with no more than 9 ingredients. 

 

Four finalists will be chosen by the judging panel and five other semi-finalists will be posted on www.manischewitz.com to select the fifth finalist. From February 21st through February 28th, consumers can vote online, and via Facebook and Twitter, to select the fifth finalist. For complete contest details, log onto www.manischewitz.com.  For the first time ever, Manischewitz will be hosting the live Cook-Off on March 21, 2013 at their Headquarters and Manufacturing Facilities in Newark, NJ.  The headquarters has been specially retrofitted for the event.  That same day, Manischewitz will also showcase Kosher for Passover Matzo Production Tours for guests and media as the event precedes Passover which begins March 26, 2013.

Chicken with Braised Red Cabbage and Fennel

Serves 4

 

3 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium onion, coarsely chopped

1 (3-pound) chicken, cut in eighths

1 tablespoon Manischewitz kosher salt

1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1 (10-ounce) bag shredded red cabbage

1/2 head fennel, shredded

2 cups Manischewitz All Natural Chicken Broth

1 teaspoon dried thyme

1 (12-ounce) package Manischewitz Medium Egg Noodles

Applesauce (optional)

 

1.  Heat oil in a large saute pan over medium heat. Add onions and saute them for 5 minutes or until soft.

2.  Season chicken with salt and pepper.  Add chicken to the pan and brown for about 8 minutes on each side.  Transfer to a bowl.

3.  Add cabbage, fennel, broth, and thyme to the pan, mixing well. Bring to a boil. Return chicken to the pan, reduce the heat to a high simmer. Cover and cook for 15 minutes.

4.  Transfer to a serving platter. Serve over noodles and with applesauce, if desired.

 

 

Steak with Pan Sauce

This type of preparation is called “à la minute,” meaning right away when you order it.

Serves 2

 

2 (8-ounce) bone-in or 2 (6-ounce) boneless rib-eye steaks

2 teaspoons Manischewitz kosher salt

1 teaspoon cracked black pepper

4 tablespoons olive oil

2 medium shallots, minced

4 tablespoons dry red wine (such as Cabernet Sauvignon)

1/2 cup Manischewitz All Natural Beef Broth

 

1.  Season steaks with salt and pepper.

2.  In a large sauté pan, heat oil over high heat. Place steaks in the pan and sear for 1 minute. Reduce heat to medium-high and cook for 3 minutes on each side for medium-rare doneness. Transfer steaks to 2 dinner plates and cover with foil to keep warm.

3.  Add shallots and red wine to the pan; cook for 1 minute.  Stir in broth and continue cooking for about 4 minutes or until sauce is reduced by half.

4. Pour sauce over steaks.

 U.S. residents 18 or older are invited to submit an original, easy-to-prepare entrée using any flavor of new Manischewitz Broth product.  Recipes should have no more than a total of nine ingredients and be prepared and cooked in one hour or less. For official contest details log onto www.manischewitz.com, complete the official entry form and submit your recipe online or by mail. Entries must be received by January 15, 2012.  Four finalists will be selected by a panel of judges and one finalist will be selected during the online people’s choice vote from February 13-24, 2012. Five contestants will compete live in New York City in front of a panel of live judges on March 28, 2012.
