A Tribute to Moms Everywhere

A very special day for very special people

In the weeks since this column was written last my daughter has learned how to not only sit up, but pull herself up to a standing position which makes her happier than I have ever seen.

But today, the topic is not about her, but rather the wonderful woman who gave birth to her and all the other moms around the world. For me, that includes my mom, my step-mom, my mother-in-law and my grandmother. To say nothing of the aunts and siblings I have who are also incredible mothers.

The name of the column is Day of the Dad, but lets face it, without moms, there would be no dads. From the smallest children, to the grown adults there seems to be a limitless amount of things moms can do.

It doesn't matter how old you get, the moms in your life are always there for you. Whether it is keeping you in line about what you're wearing, or whether you shaved or not, or whether you're eating too much or not enough. They're there for you.

But as quickly as they are there to keep you in line, moms are also there for you when you need them. From kissing your boo boos as a child to being someone to listen to when you had a more grown up problem, there they were.

It has not even been nine months yet, but I have been impressed every day with how my wife has been able to relate to my daughter. Her maternal instincts are obvious with everything from feeding to cleaning to learning to play with our little girl. But you better believe that on the days things are not going well for her, her first call is almost always to her mother. And with that one phone call you can see at least some of the weight of the world taken off of her shoulders.

For me, my mom was the same person who even when I hit a t-ball that whacked her right in the head, she would be there to help me with my homework or anything else I needed. And even when I thought I was a big shot 6th grader deciding to take french, my spanish teaching mother let me make my own decisions. Even when she knew there was definitely a different and probably easier way to go.

As I close in on my 30th birthday she is still there for me. Whether it is a phone call, or a home cooked meal, or the joy I see when she plays with her grand daughter she is as important in my life as she was the day I was born.

There is no doubt that dads do their part, and it's an important part. But you can never count out the impact a mom has on your life, whether you're three days old or almost three decades old. So on this Mother's Day, no matter how old you are or where you are don't forget to thank your mom.

After all, without her, where would you be?

About this column: Since the middle of August 2010 my life has been dramatically changed by the birth of my daughter. I never would have believed how much one little person has changed my life as she changes every day. This is the story of one man getting used to all that comes with the adventures of fatherhood.
