Farmingdale Turns to Governor's Office Following Resignations

Council members resign in neighboring town

A planned meeting of the Farmingdale Borough Council was cancelled last night following the resignations of several of the members.

According to a report in the Tri-Town News several members of the council resigned earlier this summer with more members submitting their resignation prior to Tuesday's meeting. The report said the borough clerk and code enforcement officer had also recently resigned.

In an effort to find a resolution to the situation, the borough has reached out to Gov. Chris Christie's office. A statement from the Governor's office said, "The Governor's Office and Department of Community Affairs are aware of the development in Farmingdale. Local Officials have been in contact with the administration on how to proceed with filling the council vacancies in accordance with statutory powers and responsibilities of the Governor in such a rare and unusual situation."

State statute indicates the governor must fill the vacancies within 30 days and the person filling the vacancy must be from the same political party as the individual who resigned.

There was no word from the borough or the governor's office as of Wednesday about when within those 30 days the situation would be resolved.
