Fire Ignites on Roof of Gus's Diner in Manalapan

Adelphia Fire Department assists in extinguishing blaze

Gus's Diner, located at Route 33 East in Manalapan Township, suffered a roof fire in the early morning hours of Tuesday, Jan. 22.

At about 1:47 a.m., Manalapan police were called to the scene by a motorist who reportedly saw flames from the restaurant roof while driving past the establishment.

Firefighters quickly responded to the scene and doused the flames. Howell's Adelphia Fire Company, Manalapan Fire Company #1, Gordon's Corner Fire Company, Englishtown Fire Department and Freehold Borough Fire Department all responded to the scene.

Manalapan Fire Company #1 confirmed that the flames were coming from the roof where a new addition of the restaurant meets the existing structure; the restaurant is currently undergoing an expansion.

Firefighters initially fought the flames from the inside of the building, which was stemming from the roof and then two ladder trucks from the Englishtown Fire Department gained access to the roof.

The Englishtown-Manalapan First Aid Squad also assisted, according to Capt. Michael Fountain of the Manalapan Police Department. No injuries were reported and the scene was cleared by 4:45 a.m., according to Manalapan Fire Company #1.

Monmouth County Deputy Fire Marshal Rick Hogan is currently investigating the incident along with Detective Charles Alaimo of the Manalapan Police Department, although at this time the fire appears to be accidental, Fountain reported.
