Howell Awarded Sustainable Jersey Grant

Thanks to a grant from the Sustainable Jersey Small Grants Program Township Manager Helene Schlegel said the administration will be able help improve the quality of life for residents. 

Schlegel said the $2000 grant is designed to help communities with sustainable activities to benefit residents. She said the money from the grant will be used for the township's "Safe Routes to School," action plan. The goal of the plan is to reduce the township's carbon emissions by encouraging things like foot and bike traffic.

The money from the grant will also be used to expand the township's tree planting program "to improve the functionality as well as the aesthetics of the Municipality," Schlegel added. 

Sustainable Jersey Grants are funded by PSE&G. Senior Vice president Ann Hoskins said the grants are an important part of the utility's involvement in the towns they serve. "We are proud to support this program and to fund projects that will make life better in neighborhoods all over New Jersey."

A press release from the company said so far 67 percent of towns and cities in the state have taken part in the Sustainable Jersey program. "The impact that these projects will make in New Jersey is incredible," said Pam Mount, Chair of the Sustainable Jersey Board of Trustees. "Aiding towns and Green Teams to achieve their sustainability goals by funding green initiatives will have a ripple effect that will benefit us all."

In total 20 municipalities received the grants this year including.  Other local recipients include Oceanport in Monmouth County and Pine Beach in Ocean County.
