Howell Receives Open Space Grant
County money to be used to expand existing property
Thanks to grant money from Monmouth County Howell Township will be able to add more than seven acres to its existing open space rolls.
The township was recently announced as one of the recipients of a 2012 Monmouth County Municipal Open Space Grant. This is the tenth time the grant has been awarded with 23 applications seeking more than $3.8 million according to information provided by Township Manager Helene Schlegel.
Howell Township was awarded $98 thousand, the full amount applied for to help with the purchase of the Van Schoick property. Schlegel said the purchase of the 7.27 acre property, which is next to the 800 acre Bear Swamp Natural Area, "meets the program's goal to acquire, preserve and improve land for park, recreation and open space purchases.

Yeah, so the Town can build more Softball and Soccer fields that can only be used by private groups, like the fields on Rt. 547. If you go there with your kids to use the fields you get kicked off because you don't belong to these groups. Our tax dollars at work.

And if we are not allowed to go there unless we are part of a sanctioned group, the least that could be done is to offer a small amount of historical context to the area. Most current residents of Howell never even heard the name Van Schoick and know nothing about the place, or who Charles Van Schoick even was, what type of farming was done there or even how many acres the farm originally included.
