Hurricane Sandy should make its presence felt in New Jersey in the next 24 to 36 hours and the Howell Township administration is preparing for whatever the storm will bring to the township.

In an email to residents Township Manager Helene Schlegel said the Emergency Operations Center will be activated as the storm gets closer. While it is not currently active residents will be able to call 732-414-3239 with any non-emergency storm related questions. Residents with emergencies are still encouraged to call 911. 

With the possibility of extended power outages Schlegel said residents should make sure they have "batteries, lights, and other means of communication," for when the storm arrives. "Residents on a well water should consider filling up containers," she added.

Along with power outages there is also a strong possibility of flooding especially in low lying areas and Schlegel said anyone concerned for their safety, like those affected by Hurricane Irene, "should make arrangements for alternative living arrangements. We may not be able to get to you."

Residents are also encouraged to register for the township's emergency notification system so they can get the latest information by phone and email. 

Schlegel also said the township is looking into setting up shelters "on an as needed basis."
