Out of Time: Abandoned Clock Factory Demolition Resumes

Work continues to take down long abandoned building

Since work began to take down the old Harris & Mallow Clock Factory on Route 9 the process has been interrupted by asbestos cleanup before resuming in recent weeks.

In the rain on Thursday crews worked to take down the bulk of the main building which has been abandoned for close to two decades. A structure which once stood at the intersection of Route 9 and Georgia Tavern Road is now mostly a pile of rubble with a few walls still standing.

Councilman Robert Nicastro said he was glad to see work continuing to remove the abandoned building from the site. "It's a prime location," he said. "It will improve the area significantly."

Nicastro said the council hopes the owner of the property will now look for a "interested party," to build something new at the site. "We look forward to whoever that might be to develop it into something nice," he added.

Clearing out and removing abandoned buildings like the clock factory and others along the Route 9 corridor and in the town is something Nicastro said is important to the governing body. He said by doing that they believe they will be able to bring in more ratables which he said are "definitely needed," in the township.

' Abandoned Clock Factory'. Just how old is this factory? Asbestos Cleanup? Has anybody within the EPA or DEP ever tested that site for its 'Radium Levels'? Did that place ever employ "Radium Girls"...who were sickened from painting watch dials with 'glow-in-the-dark' paint?

No need to worry about the clock factory being an eyesore any longer......now the billboards popping up on the section of route nine can take over.
