Patch Writer's Mother-In-Law Killed in CT School Shootings

Mary Sherlach, the mother-in-law of Patch writer Eric Schwartz, was among 27 people killed in the second-deadliest school shooting in American history.

The deadly shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, claimed the life of a Patch writer's family member

Mary Sherlach, the school's psychologist, was among 26 people, including 20 children, who died when a gunman opened fire at the school Friday morning. The gunman, identified as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, also died in the rampage.

Sherlach was the mother-in-law of Deptford resident Eric Schwartz, a longtime Patch freelancer who covers high school sports in South Jersey.

Sherlach, 56, lived in Trumbull, CT.

Schwartz and his wife, Maura, arrived in Connecticut on Friday evening to be with their family. They could not be reached for comment.

In the shooting spree, Lanza also reportedly killed his mother, who was a teacher at the school, and Sandy Hook's principal, Dawn Hochsprung

Update, 2:35 a.m. Dec. 15: Schwartz spoke to Patch about his mother-in-law, Mary Sherlach. Read his thoughts at Mary Sherlach, CT School Shooting Victim, Looked Ahead to Next Stage of Life.

Pete, I don't see how we're "exploiting" Eric or his family in any way. We're doing our job as reporters by sharing information about someone killed in a tragedy. In this case, one of the victims has a connection to Patch, and we pointed out that connection.

Having been through a very public tragedy, I can tell you that privacy must be respected. You can pray for someone without knowing specifics, or putting it online. In our despair, we did not want social media buzzing about our loved one. Also, your so-called friends will throw you under the bus in a heartbeat, in order to be able to announce some infornation they may have.

Since it was a reporter I am sure they gave full permission for this. But as far as interviewing children who may end up with ptsd and other issues through out their life right after it happened. That is exploitation.

Japan has very strict gun laws and the gun violence there is next to nothing. Why do we need guns in 2012? This isn't the Wild, Wild West. Ignore the gun lobbyists, the the legislators who align with them, and adopt a law more in keeping with peacemaking. May God grant peace to those parents who lost their beautiful little children and the families who lost their loved ones to this murder that should never have occurred. May we be guided by good conscience - not politics - and do what is right to revamp the gun law. {Linda Spreeman, King of Prussia}

There HAS TO BE some more stringent rules regarding the sale and availability of guns in this country. Too many getting hold of them and killing and maiming other innocent men, women and children. If there ever WAS a time to talk about guns and the horrific cost in human lives they incur especially here in America, it's now...when the smallest and most innocent are mowed down with impunity. I don't CARE what the killer's mental status was or whether or not the guns were 'accessible' to him (personally I don't think so--I suspect he forced his mother to give him the keys before murdering her), but ALL of the talk about 'glorifying violence' still comes back to the one salient fact: that the vast amount of violence in our country is done with GUNS. Bullets kill, and they're fired from these weapons as we've just seen yesterday. These most innocent of all: IN school thinking of the upcoming holidays with their families and likely just beginning to look forward to a lovely day having no idea that within minutes it'd be turned into something out of a horror show. I simply can't wrap my mind around a human being shooting a small child. Impossible. Someone here wanted to know where he got it from, if not the movies? How about from the LAST mass murderer? Each one seemingly wanting to outdo the previous one: in terms of numbers and 'news-worthiness'--and amount of pain inflicted? Restrict the ammunition/the bullets and we can get a handle on these horrific murders. Someone else mentioned Japan, where they have NO gun shootings like this--and full gun control with extremely strict background checks. How is it THEY can make it work and we can't?!

Excelent post, Scotty!! One thing I think we have to remember when saying, "...other countries do it, why can't the United States?"...I said this myself over and over again... guess we have to remember that many countries in the world are about the size of one of our states, or even smaller and much less populated, than the United States. Therefore, more killer types, more w mental problems etc. etc. etc....the beat goes on. I'm sure you all understand what I'm saying. More people, more of all kinds of types....and I guess, making laws that apply to all...........situations and events...................

It doesn't work all that well. There was a mass killing there some years ago using poison gas; 500 injured, some permanently. People are murdered in Japan, with horrible, more painful methods than shooting. Everyone is in agreement that mentally-ill people should not steal guns, or murder children, here or anywhere else.

We only need to ask one simple question : What psychiatric drug was he taking or withdrawing from? Sometimes simple questions are the hardest to ask.

Those questions would be real real hard for the media to ask, because after reporting the event, taking station breaks for advertisements for antidepressants and other psychiatric drugs might give big media editors and producers indigestion , since they depend on Big Pharma sponsorship.

Everyone should read the second amendment and our fore fathers thoughts on it. It speaks about allowing a militia for a free state. In the late 1770's our country was still under the threat of British invasion and takeover. That is what the founders of the constitution meant. Not for people to people to own multiple guns with hundreds of rounds. If the founders of our country were around today they would be shocked at how this amendment has been twisted into the violence and huge money industry it has become. An actual fact, 43 times more than used to defend a possible intruder, guns are used, stolen, accidently fired, found, etc for purposes other than what some claim as 'in case of emergency, defending myself or family'. That justification does not wash anymore. Certified military, police, real hunters, etc. are the only people who need a gun, let alone many with hundreds of rounds.

You forgot target shooting. People who shoot bull-eyes outnumber most firearm enthusiasts. I understand that the CT shooter's mom liked target shooting. It's an Olympic sport, and difficult to master. People go through large amounts of ammunition while practicing. However, all agree that mentally-ill people should not steal firearms, or murder children. No argument there.

Isn't it true that in the 1770's we, the U.S. did not have a 'standing army' and that citizens were called up to fight when it was necessary? Now, we have our military in place.........all kinds of protection...........therefore a law made then does/should not apply now. We don't need a 'citizens army' ... civilians don't need to have guns to protect themselves or to 'go fight' for their country. Perhaps I'm not expressing myself exactly right BUT why the need for so many to have so many guns? AND, even if it is allowed as now.........they should be contained/locked up to protect our citizens from just the kind of event that happened in Conn. and has much to often in our country. As Steve said, "..that justification doesn't wash anymore!!!!!

178 million guns owned legally in the us and only 10,000 deaths a year. Sounds to me like most people are responsible with guns, especially since 60% of those deaths are caused by people with criminal records and another 10% by people who have been arrested but not convicted.

Steve............After reading most of the post on the subject of weapon/gun owning... I've come to the conclusion that those who support the owning of guns by 'anybody' seem to need to have something to prove about themselves. I can see owning guns for 'hunting' as my uncles did each year, legally. Bringing home deer meat mostly and sometimes rabbit, which by the way, tastes like chicken to me. ANYWAY, I've read some of the posters on in my 'mail' and haven't yet found them in this link as wanted to respond to you. Your post is very reasonable compared to those who 'shoot off their mouths' w/o even considering the other persons statements. You are right.......too many people owning guns don't use their God given brains to consider what harm guns left unsecured can kill innocent men, women and children.......as happened ...........it's a terrible tragedy and those that bitch and moan about those of us criticizing the owning of guns, have their heads up where the sun don't shine...AND...I bet this post will be deleted because of my last statement....but it 'ain't' vulgar ......

Yes, Steve, the founding fathers WOULD be shocked at how that has been twisted. Men were called up as needed and they either showed up or not with their weapons.

So you want an "armed citizen" in schools. Who would this "armed citizen" be? If you want schools to have police officers stationed, then you have to pay for it through taxes & people are complaining that their taxes are too high now. And how many "armed citizens" would you station in the school? Imagine a school like Eyer, or EHS that have many entrances/hallways.One in each entrance/hallway? For if you only have one or two in a school like this it probably would not be effective unless the intruder happened to enter right where the "armed citizen" is standing. Years ago, having a police officer in EHS was discussed. The cost was over $35,000.00/per year. Nobody wanted to pay. Are teachers/administrators willing to give up salary? I don't think so.Imagine schools hiring a private security firm to protect. I worked at EHS when they did this. Some of these security officers that were there should not have been allowed to protect anybody. One had a very short fuse and cursed at the students. One, I remember, flirted with the girls. Not really a good idea. Maybe the solution is a complete change of attitude in this country. You do not see this in other industrialized countries. People do not need semi automatic weapons. Better economy. Less hate. Would help. Better access to health care through much lower insurance premiums so people could afford health care. But I digress. A sense of hope and caring before the tragedy.

Because shutting down a 6 billion dollar industry would help the economy, and because access to affordable health care means that a mentally ill person will voluntarily commit themselves... Right?

The real reason that these tragedies occur is because we glorify the perpetrators. You get 24 hour coverage of what they did, making sure that every person in the nation (sometimes the world) knows the body count, the way they did it, everything the person did up to the event, and their face plastered on the TV along with it. We may be saying that this is horrible when we do these things, but really all we do is make sure people know that if they do something as heinous as what had happened in CT (which has some of the most strict gun control laws in the nation) that they will be remembered; if not the person the event. We all remember Columbine, Virginia Tech, the Unabomber, Timothy McVeigh, and the shooting at Texas A&M by Charles Whitman. At the end of the day that is the reason most of these people do these things, for one reason or another they feel outside of society, and they will do something that people will remember them for.

And so what's the answer, Nancy? Pass laws to protect us against everything? As to your earlier comment about the standing military...the main concern of the founders was keeping the government in check and this was accomplished by being able to call up the citizenry at a moment's notice. Nothing has changed. The more government gets the more it wants; its appetite for power and control is insatiable.

Paul, the answer to the question you ask is to outlaw all gun ownership. When will you see the light, Paul? Are you happy that so many families are mourning and you can still own guns? Does owning a gun make you feel like a real man? Twenty children are dead and here you are crying about gun laws. Where is your love for humanity? Twenty six and seven year old kids are dead and all you are worried about is being allowed to own a gun. How pathetic.

I didn't ask you, nor did I address your earlier non-nonsensical comments, because I already know you have all the answers, Plundit. And hiding behind a pseudonym, as well. Aren't you the real man...or woman! Don't feel the need to respond because I stopped reading your comments after I saw some of your other response on another blog. But then again, I'm sure you're just writing to read your own stuff anyway. A real legend in your own mind. You're a sick person.

Pundit needs to learn that the liberals can't control drugs, let alone guns.

They are here to stay.

Now I suggest you to go get one and exercise your 2nd amendment.

Guns are here to stay folks.

The liberals should back to banning 16 oz slurpies.

Pundit, Good post!!! There are some 'people' who have to have 'something' to hold on to to make them feel secure, important/macho or 'whatever'. With all these mass murders happening in this country (read the news and see how other countries, not including those w their born terrorists) there are many other 'civilized' countries who do not have this problem. Granted, the US is many times larger than many other countries (one of our states is the size of many) but why are 'we' so violent here.
AND, think I mentioned this before.......look at all those violent games our children play on line/tv and in their hand held items. My grandchildren play them also and I don't understand why their parents allow them to do so...of course...it's their lives. Some people with mental problems don't have the control/emotions to make them see it for what it is...a game, abeit violent one. Too many 'careless' gun owners. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Go ahead, own guns for sport or just as a hobby BUT keep them locked up and away from your children/teens or emotionally distrubed children/young adults. I read where a little boy shot his little sister 'accidentially' because of a gun left 'around'...how horrific to that boy and familhy to 'live w that on their consciences'... ENOUGH, I've posted more than enough.

Looks like Nan and Pun have a mutual admiration society going on. Can you feel the love, people?
BTW, Twisty, did it ever occur to you that it wasn't the gun left out it was the parent who left it out so maybe we should be banning people from becoming parents because they are responsible for their children getting hurt?
Why don't we just put you and Pun in charge of making all the rules, Twisty? Yea, that's the ticket.

Paul, you are truly disgraceful. Twenty 6 and 7 year old children, innocents all of them, are dead. And their parents, siblings, and grandparents and other family members are destroyed – they are literally destroyed. And on top of the deaths of these innocent children are the families of the slaughtered adults – also innocent victims. Yet you whine like a child who has been told to eat his or her vegetables before getting up from the table. You are truly pitiful – you are a true psychopath who is whining, at this of all times, about your pathetic rights to own weapons that kill many children all at once. The right of all of the dead children and adults to live supersedes your right to own assault weapons.
By the way, Nancy is a beloved senior citizen who has raised a good family, she helped make this country great and you have audacity to trash her like that. It only makes you more pathetic. Talk to her with the respect she deserves.

My prayers and condolences go to ALL families who have lost a loved one from this violent evil act. Now is the time to grieve, heal and then deal with the political talk on here. Yes, one of the patch members family died and it was reported on the news this morning about ALL the victims and even showing pictures of them. We should be more postive in your comments on this post. Respectful comments please!

Sharon, I understand your point but I must ask how many of these carnages have to occur until we no longer have to be positive? How many children must be slaughtered until we can say this is wrong and this must be stopped? I grieve for the families and want the madness to stop now.

Day 3 no mention of the psych drugs Lanza was taking or withdrawing from. SSRI's are deadly, read the inserts.

AAAhhhh, seems to me 'Paul' needs to stop criticizing those who disagree with him or criticizes his opines..........it's a free country Paul..........and smart & intelligence people should not have to demean those who disagree with them...we should all have 'open minds' not influenced by any organization or whatever like the NRA...by the way....in reading much via the computer, it seems as if the NRA gave more money to the Republican candidates this last election than ever before...it's in the New York times and other good sources.

Years ago, mentally-ill were committed to institutions, kept out of sight and harm's way. Here, a mentally-ill person stole firearms, killed the owner, and then took the owner's car to a school, where he killed children with the stolen guns. The NRA is opposes all those actions, and does not support selling firearms in 7-11's. You are making light of a terrible tragedy, and it's not funny.

It is very tragic but yet poetic justice that the guns Adam Lanza used to slaughter those people were owned by his mother, a NRA member and his first victim. She even taught him how to shoot.

Gun sales aren't going anywhere except up Pundit. If LIBS were for guns you would be whining like a young girl today..

99.999% of the blame should be directed towrds the greedy LIBERAL HOLLYWOOD MOVIE MAKERS who make millions meanwhile corrupt the minds of our youth.

America now tastes the blood thanks to the sick Hollywood machine. Would Obama or Feinstein dare go after them?

This kid played violent video games since he could walk.

The kid and mother were wacked, but HOLLYWOOD gets most of the blame for the way young society has evolved into bloodthirsty beasts.

Oh no, can this story get any worse. Adam Lanza’s mother, not only owned the guns and belonged to the NRA, she was a gun proud survivalist. Oh no. I am not going to say why I think the son went off, I will wait for the police to say. They do say they know the motive. This is why we need super strict gun control.
According to the UK Telegraph, “Nancy Lanza, whose gun collection was raided by her son Adam for Friday’s massacre at Sandy Hook school, was part of the “prepper” movement, which urges readiness for social chaos by hoarding supplies and training with weapons.”
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/9749217/Connecticut-school-shooting-Adam-Lanzas-mother-was-preparing-for-disaster.html
All those dead children and the heroes that protected them. And all those kids who will remember that day forever.
This is so wrong.

The problem with stricter gun control is you live in America, not Russia.

If you can't beat 'em you might as well join them,

Protect your family at night Pundit.

You can't be running arounf your house with a pair of flowered underwear on and your kids baseball bat. There are crackheads out there looking for a fix.

Go get yourself a nice Colt.

My heart goes out to the families of the victims of this needless tragedy.

Credit, of course, to the brave teachers who died trying to defend their charges.

It's a crime that the teachers and administrators, like all others nation-wide, were, and are, prohibited from being able to actually defend themselves and our children.

Just as TSA is feel-good security theater and the Israelis actually know how to screen threats, in Israel teachers and parent volunteers are trained and armed so that they can actually prevent/stop such acts of mass murder. Here we have large, well advertised zones rich in easy targets that are prohibited by law from being defended in a timely and effective manner.

Teachers already must pass stringent background checks before they are given access to our children. We should make training and ready access to defensive weapons in the school a job requirement and part of their certification.

Every moment of delay in neutralizing the threat equals more dead innocents.

Stop the insanity. Allow teachers to defend themselves and their charges and require that they be trained and equipped to do so.
