Polar Bear Plunge Moved To Long Branch
Hurricane Sandy destruction forced Special Olympics to move February 2013 event away from Seaside Heights
The 20th annual Polar Bear Plunge to benefit Special Olympics New Jersey, held in Seaside Heights for the last six years, has been moved to Long Branch, officials have announced.
This event will take place on Saturday, Feb. 23.
The decision to move the event was made in the weeks following Hurricane Sandy, as the magnitude of devastation to the area became apparent, officials said.
“This iconic shore town has welcomed us for the past six years, but now they need to focus solely on restoration efforts,” said Marc Edenzon, president of Special Olympics New Jersey.
“While Sandy wreaked havoc on the residents and businesses of Seaside Heights, we have no doubt that there is a resiliency among the leadership and greater Seaside Heights Community that will lead to an extraordinary recovery.”
Seaside Heights Mayor William Akers, quoted in a release from the Special Olympics, said it is his hope that everybody who was planning on attending the Plunge will still come out to support the event.
“Special Olympics New Jersey is a worthy cause and we are pleased that the organizers have found a suitable location to host the event,” he said.
Thousands of people take the Plunge each year into the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean to raise money for the athletes of Special Olympics New Jersey. This past February, more than 5,900 plungers raised over $1.4 million in this single-day event.
The Polar Bear Plunge will be held at 1 p.m., with registration opening at 9 a.m. All Plungers must raise a minimum of $100 to participate. Incentives are given for higher fundraising levels.
Radio station NJ 101.5’s Big Joe Henry, “the Voice of the Plunge” will broadcast live on Plunge Day with interviews, updates and a countdown to Plunge.

Point Pleasant lost out on this a while back thanks to the dysfunctional goverment. Seaside took it and makes out pretty good with it in business revenue.

as stated before....PPB was happy to have this leave. It only generated income for the boardwalk business that hosted it. And that is fair for them, no problem with that. It caused more issues with drunken driving than any other event....but those DD incidents always managed to be swept under the rug......

You have a war on alcohol in your community. I think the last go around was that large sum of money wasted on the 12AM closing issue. You're goverment is a laughing stock of the local area, constant fighting for many years has taken a toll on the towns image.
Perhaps Belmar should stop the parade to your point.
What other business would make money off such an event. Do you expect Bordens Stationary to be busy on such a day. Hotels make money as would your town on parking fees and fines.
Point Unpleasant shall remain quiet this day as they so choose.

No war on alcohol here....other than the Mayor and Council and a small number of residents. Majority of the residents don't see a need for the early closing so you are wrong there.
Hotels make money? Off the polar plunge? No history of that happening as majority of people would leave after the party ended (hence the multiple driving incidents). And at the time of the event....parking meters/fees are NOT in effect. Too many would complain about that....
The event is a very worthy cause. Unfortunately, that cause gets lost in the after events....

Point Pleasant talks about quality of life in regards to its bars being open past midnight. Somehow the extra millions the bars have to pay to stay open past midnight improves everyones quality of life and make all the previous problems go away,
Hotels make money on the polar bear plunge so the responsible would have a place to sleep the night before, clean up after the event, and sleep that night. Most seaside hotels were booked solid that weekend.

You do know the midnight close rule never took affect, don't you? There were no millions that had to be paid to stay open....
And having lived here during the years it was held at Jenks...the hotels were NOT full.

Well I know little about this event specifically, but I do know that Pt. Pl. absolutely,unfairly littered our car with unreasonable tickets due to meter inoperation and we absolutely have pretty much boycotted spending money at their boardwalk for years now as a result. I do frequent the shops on Arnold Ave, but that unfair ticketing absolutely left a bad taste in my mouth. They won the battle but lost the war on that one.

I know the rule never took effect, see my post above about the money you wasted trying to implement that.
What was the point of it, if there is a problem with the bars then close them down. Having them pay extra would not do anything to end the noise or make it better.
You people want the shore restored, the boardwalk restored by tax dollars, and our money in your coffers, yet you deep down despise us. This alone is a stellar example of it.

You want the people to come and support your families incomes but on your own terms.
Why would the people come if there was no reason to such as a bar or night club. If it's such a problem then close the bars and be Mantolooking or Bay Head. Those towns and Spring lake have no issues because they do not crave the income your town does. Now would be a great time to re-zone and redo the ambiance of the town.
It cost money to do what you failed to do. Attorneys make a whole lot of money doing municipal work. Someone should ask how much that failed foray cost and publish it here. Either way it's your loss and the dysfunction of the goverment there cannot be denied. Well documented over the years in newspapers.
