Power Fully Restored to NJ by Sunday, Christie Says

Governor also praises National Guard at press conference in Somerset.

 

Gov. Chris Christie praised the National Guard's work in New Jersey during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, and expects all power to be restored to the state by early Sunday.

Christie spoke at a press conference on Thursday, flanked by members of the National Guard at an armory in Somerset. 

Patch has made two calls to JCP&L and has yet to obtain reaction to the governor's statement. We will post that information once it becomes available.

"I wanted to come here and thank these men and women as an example of the over 2,200 National Guardsmen I ordered activated in the prelude to Hurricane Sandy," Christie said. "They have done an extraordinary job."

Christie addressed a number of issues still plaguing the state, including power outages. 

Christie said as of Thursday morning there were 390,746 customers without power in the state, an increase of about 19,000 from Wednesday. He said some of that was due to new outages caused by winter storm Athena.

"Good news is we have not seen the kind of damage we saw with Hurricane Sandy and we are confident that we will be able to move forward in our recovery efforts," Christie said.

The governor also said he expects the state to have its power fully restored by early Sunday, according to a report by the Associated Press.

Christie also said the gas situation in the state has improved over the past few days, thanks in part to the National Guard's distribution efforts and the odd-even system. He said that he will reevaluate that system over the weekend, and decide if it needs to continue next week.

Christie said 77 percent of the schools and 80 percent of the districts in the state were operating on Thursday. He said two days before that percentage was in the 40s.

There has been some confusion about FEMA aid, according to Christie, who urged residents to call and register with the agency.

"I had people who I spoke to last night who said 'FEMA hasn't been to my house. It's outrageous,'" he said. "I said 'when did you register?' and they said 'I have to register?' Yes, you have to register first or they don't know where you live. They aren't going to every house."

Residents of the barrier islands may be able to visit their homes again very soon. Christe said from Berkeley to Brick, controlled visitation would take place no later than Saturday. He said that Friday had been the plan originally, but that change due to the impact of the latest storm.

Note that JCP&L is in last place at 75%. Today is my 11th day without power, and I haven't seen any workers in my area yet. Out-of-state workers have stated that JCP&L's system is "antiquated" (much of it not even computerized) and shows a "gross lack of maintenance."

Evidently, for years, they've been cutting corners here while collecting our money and sending profits to corporate HQ in Ohio for overpaid executives and stockholders. The state Board of Public Utilities must investigate JCP&L again, but this time impose serious sanctions and/or force the corporate big-shots to sell the NJ operations to a competent company.

For the amt. of taxes & cost of property in NJ the damn JCP&L should NOT have an antiquated power system. My daughter's family in Brick are also on day 11 of NO power. Thank God she & her husband are FL.natives & have a generator, gas hot water & stove, & a fireplace. She is such an optimist & said, "Well, the snow is beautiful" this am. My heart goes out to see the ruins of Pt.Pleasant boardwalk(where I grew up), Belmar, Mantoloking & so many others. God bless all of NJ & NY suffering through the after-effects of Hurricane Sandy & then the Nor'eastern. OMG, what is next? Locusts?

Me to we have one line down and there are ten houses without power. We keep being told we are last. Everyone around us had had power since last Tuesday. This is ridiculous. My husband is working outdoors for a township 16 hour days and coming home to a dark cold house. I have actaully tried to call the Governers office well forget it.

NE Tinton Falls has been dark since 6:30 the night the hurricane hit, the town was nearly 100% back up yesterday before the last mess hit including all the resources they poured into fixing the pole at the HS on Tuesday where no one would be until at least Monday anyways while residents still lived in generator city, and now nearly half the town in the dark again guess who's still at the back of the line to get fixed?

YES, somehow the bill never seems to reflect the fact that you didn't have service !!! The same in Fl. I recall after Hurricane Frances in one awful Sept., we had NO power for 12 days. Then power for 2 days. Then Hurricane Jeanne hit & we had NO power for 10 more days that same month of Sept. So NO power for 22 days out of 30 & the bill didn't go down. Unreal, right?

I pay my bill monthly or they would dis connect me. I had power for 3 days and last nights storm shut me down again. There was no reason for that to happen! I have a 60 foot Blue Spruce tree hanging on the electric wires that blew my transformer setting off a chain reaction leaving blocks of homes without power. I called JCPL numerous times to tell them to come but they never did. I was told not to cut it myself or I would be fined. Well now there's no power! Thanks for your quick response!

Yes, my daughter's family in Brick has the same issue. Her neighbor across the street had a tree crash & is hanging on the power lines & in my daughter's driveway. My son-in-law determined the wires were not "HOT" active & took his chainsaw to the damn tree. He figured if the street wasn't accessible, the power trucks couldn't get in. Day 11 & still no power. BUT.....he did get free firewood.

I know patience is in very short supply, but does everyone understand the magnitude of this storm? The infrastructure is aging but no one ever wants to spend money before it's actually needed. Or at least their own money. Do you have any idea how much it would cost JCP&L (and ultimately you, the consumer) to bury lines, in hopes of preventing lenghthy outages? I know several people who lived through Katrina in New Orleans; unfortunately this is a long process, dealing with the aftermath. Seven years later, they still bear the emotional scars of the storm, even though they have all physically moved out of Louisianna.

Nancy, it's time to put all lines underground. Most states in america have had lines underground for decades. NJ is way behind in this effort. Time to spend the $$ to avoid all of the issues that do result from ancient, above-ground system. I don't recall our politicians ever raising that as an initiative...they are too busy with tree ordinances and school bullying programs.

FEMA is providing financial assistance to the utility companies. Yes, we understand the magnitude but a company as large as JCP&L should be prepared for these types of emergencies. Their service has been subpar for some time now. This is the icing on the cake.

I am also a resident in NE Tinton Falls. There is no f&#@ing way that the mess on Sycamore Avenue, which has received minimal attention for past 9 days, will be repaired by Sunday afternoon. The borough administration, OEM, and leadership have failed this section of the borough miserably. I have not seen one official, manager or other borough rep come to our neighborhood just to see how people are doing or offer assistance or information. They allow JCP&L to perform below acceptable standards. This area was not impacted by storm surge, tides or other water problems and yet we have no idea, other than the obvious physical evidence of trees bringing down power lines, why we are the forgotten and neglected section of the borough. Someone needs to be accountable for this mismanaged response.

JCP&L stands for Just Communicate Propaganda & Lies! The people in the field are AWESOME, but Management SUCKS! As Lynch was on the radio, saying how the restoration was going Great, Route 9 from Lakewood to Frehold lost Power AGAIN!!! And Now they blame the Noreaster's snow for the new outages, so does this mean when it snows we should expext more Outages? Tree limbs in the lines are Never Trimmed, and I challenge Lynch to visit where I live and look at the limbs grown in between the wires, then say to my face that the area has been properly maintained!!!!! Less maintenence means More Profits for JCP&L, and More OUTAGES for Us!

When I called Tuesday evening I called the number they provide for outages, 1-888-LIGHTSS. I went through a recording and was offered the opportunity to speak to a representative. I wish I could remember her name, very polite and liked to joke around. Definitely made it easier. One of the best reps I have ever dealt with. She told me call back in the morning more updated info may be available.

Wednesday I called back, and there was a totally new system in place. Completely automated, with no option to speak to a rep. Just report the outage and get hung up on. Seemed very fishy, like they were avoiding giving out answers on that line anymore.

Bombard away. We need to let FirstEnergy of Akron, Ohio know we exist, and we're very unhappy. With due respect, I doubt that the reason First Energy is being unresponsive is that we are asking too many questions or calling too often. And, as most of us know, those estimates were always bogus. JCP&L summoned our Mayor to its offices last Saturday, and then refused to tell him anything. Five days after the storm, JCP&L certainly should have known what was wrong, how many trucks were where, what they were doing, and how long it would take to fix things. I thank the crews from Georgia and Alabama who finally restored our power - and I regret that JCP&L needed those good people to travel hundreds of miles to do what JCP&L can't do.

We have above ground lines with trees growing thru them (they were laughing) we don't have enough underground lines (laughing some more) and all the workers that have come from out of state CANNOT touch anything unitl a local crew arrives -- what a joke they are

That's a VERY bold statement to make. Just loaned my generator to my sister. They lost power during the nor'easter last night. Want to see how bad the infrastructure is? Look at the tops of the utility poles in pine lake park. They're half rotten. No surprises here.

Unless someone wants to make a HUGE investment in burying all the utilities, expect these outages to continue.

I live in Wall Township, in the Camp Evans area. Why can't I get any information from JCPL about what is wrong here?
I heard a rumor that we are a subsection oPoint Pleasant Beach, which was hit hard, but that doesn't make sense to me. Does anyone know anything about problems in my section of Wall. My PO is the Belmar PO, though I live closer to the Wall PO in Colfax Plaza. Thanks. My husband is 72 and prone to pneumonia. We have nowhere to go and we are freezing.

Hurricane Sandy took New Jersey by storm; it ravaged my sister's home and all her memories on Water Street, South River and took her life as well as she gave up her battle and took her last gasp for air at the ICU at St. Peter's Medical Center....knowing her home was destroyed beyond recognition. Has FEMA come to see the home --- NO; has the news media covered South River devastation - NO; has the political figures touring NJ dropped by to see her home - NO; has her home flooded 9+ times since moving into South River - YES; has the political figureheads of South RIver cared - NO; has money supposedly set aside for the construction of levies between Sayerville and South River ever made it into the right hands - NO.

My sister Theresa was my life; I promised my parents I would be there for her and keep her safe. So on October 30th at 7pm she took her last breath because in her heart she knew the home she had sacrificed to maintain and rebuild 9 times was forever gone. I hope those that felt this an insignificant matter and my sister's life not that important to give it a second glance; enjoy the time they have remaining on this earth.

But don't be mad about the storm taking her house, she lived where she wanted to live and knew all about the problems living near the ocean or the bay or she wouldn't have rebuilded 9 times to live there. i worked with a group of southern baptist church members guttimg homes for free in keansburg today, how or why they can afford to do or want to do it for free is not beyond me. It apparently is to us tho, no? God is gonna force us together because we can't stand alone. So go and help a "loser" out so they will return the "favor" I know you don't get it now. but eventually and painfully we all will get it. God bless those saviors in the name of Jesus Christ. The real issue is going to be after they finally get everyone back up will they go back and shore up all the quick patch jobs they did so we won't keep losing power every time the wind blows.

Our infrastructure wasn't all that secure before the storm now it's held together by spit and prayers. This is going to be a very long and cold winter if things go back to business as usual after the immediate crisis passes.

For the last 10 days, I have had diminishing patience with the efforts of JCP&L or lack thereof. Last night, I decided that we need to be more patient and to keep in mind that those of us simply without power are FAR better off than those who have lost their homes, possessions and related memories. What's wrong with people who complain in situations like this?? Oh, by the way, this change of mind occured right around the time my power was restored.

Just called JCPL AGAIN about the down pole/lines in my front yard that have been down since OCT 29th!!!!!

They said they are SURE everyone will have power by the 11th.

I can't say I believe them, but Im still in shock that a power company would leave potentially deadly pole/lines down on someones property for 11 days with no end in sight and no worry about someone being killed.

The rep on the phone said, "im sure they killed the juice to it".

Well im sure that would be comforting to a mother after her son was killed.

Negligence and just pure laziness.

Day 13 of no power for me! A friend was talking to 2 lìneman from Georgia, they said JCPL is disorganized, cant locate blueprints of system, has old obsolete equipment. This is what we get for some of the highest electric rates in the country?

I live in Holmdel and still no power. Funny thing is all of the homes in the area have underground wiring so it isn't an issue about downed wires in the neighborhoods. Christie is a good talker, as a former district attorney, but has zero knowledge in running an large entity. It is beyond his skillset.

There seems to be a LOT of questions of the maintaince of JCPL's equipment. Obviously, this would not mitigate the storm damage (I might be wrong on that) but it seems to be affecting the repair efforts because it is more time consuming to repai antiquated components. We all know how our quality of service since deregulation has been downgraded. To Denise: this may the a good subject for you to research and report on. Just a thought.

As a retired PSE&G lineman trouble shooter, look to blame the share holders..they wanted bigger dividends so how do we do that?..cut back on maint. and replacing old equipment , after all it doesn't cost anything to replace it after a storm..self insured.

Absolutely would have mitigated the damage. Our power infrastructure is terrible in NJ, we should have buried lines and substations protected against flooding. We bury Fiber Optic cabling in NJ and thats a lot more damage prone to freezing than power cabling is.

Wouldn't hold my breath on that call - not saying it shouldn't be done. 330 area code is Akron, Ohio. It's not JCP&L; it's FirstEnergy. You'd be lucky if the lady even knows where Monmouth County is. When I called "JCP&L," the Ohio customer service rep (employed by First Energy, not JCP&L; I asked) refused to believe that Long Branch was a city, kept asking me for the name of my "township," and did not know that Monmouth County was in New Jersey. Oh, she also refused to give me any information at all.

Fatty Mcbutterpants, You have been able to choose different energy companys all along. JCP&L is only the delivery system of the energy. There is no compition there. You need to complain to the Utility Commision & Govenors Office in order to effect change with JCP&L.

In my adult community in Ocean County, we were without power for 8 days due to Sandy and another day from Athena. A friend who lives in Florida told me his son works for Florida Power and Light and his crew was sent up to the JCP&L area to assist with disaster relief. They were told to go home since they were not of the same union. I spoke with crews from CT, IL, and AL in my area in the days after Sandy and they all told me they were not allowed to work on the lines until a JCP&L rep came to give them the OK. In some instances they were idle for days awaiting a JCP&L rep to give them the go-ahead signal. Huge waste of resources. We had a combined 250 houses in our community and the adjoining one with no power, heat, or hot water many of which are occupied by seniors in their 80's and 90's. The out of state crews told us we could have had power days before it they had only permitted them to do the work they came here to do. They were appalled at the poor management by JCP&L and inability to manage a big crisis. They also were appalled that they had to wait on line for 3 or 4 hours at a time to refuel their trucks. In other crises in other states, fuel depots were set up for repair crews with tanker deliveries to staging areas so the crews could get their work done. This was not done in NJ. The Governor should have used his authority to get that done. JCP&L must go. Incompetence should not be rewarded by continuing their license to do business in NJ.

It's funny how we hear about out of state power co's getting turned around for being non union . But you see them all over the place . Alabama and Florida have been in Middletown all week

The news out there is that they were not allowed to start working during the first couple of days, during which time union representatives were meeting with them. After that, they were able to begin working.

JCP&L has to be the worst run organization on the planet. They give no information except "power will be on tomorrow". No one has any answers. The men from Alabama Power fixed the wiring 2 days ago and told us we should be good to go. Guess what...still no power. It is so frustrating not knowing who to call or what to do. It has worn me down!

No power still in Silverton either. JCP&L has a different answer everyday as to when the power will be back on and today they blamed FEMA. Day 14 no power and worn out.
