Russian and Slavic Cultural Festival Coming to Howell

The event will begin at 12 p.m. on Sunday.

Russian culture will be celebrated on Sunday, October 2 from 12 to 7 p.m. with food, entertainment and more at the St. Alexander Foundation's 7th Annual Russian and Slavic Cultural Festival in Howell.

According to Bill Mackanic, event organizer and St. Alexander Nevsky parish member for over 20 years, the food and drink selection will include: Russian borsch (soup), shish-ke-bob, stuffed cabbage, pirozhki and flavored Russian tea that can be served with cinnamon, cloves or lemon in additional to other selections.

Mackanic added that for entertainment there will be vendors selling crafts such as matryoshka dolls -- a set of wooden dolls of decreasing size that are placed inside one another and wooden eggs. Plus, there will be entertainment that includes performances by the Troika dance group, singers Yuri and Ilona, music by Alyosha Olhovsky, as well as St. Alexander’s church liturgical choir and Russian school dancers.

"New this year are performances by Ballroom Dream -- a central Jersey dance studio run by Russian Dance champion Dasha Sushko,” Mackanic said. "But our main attraction is Barynya. World renowned as the premier folk ensemble outside of Russia, Barynya presents Russian, Cossack, Ukrainian, Jewish and Gypsy Roma traditional dancing, music, songs and virtuoso performances."

The event will be held rain or shine at 200 Alexander Ave. in Howell. Admission is $5 for adults and kids 12 and under are free. Free parking will available in the lots on Alexander Ave.

"Slavs enjoy sharing their traditions with other groups through their wonderful music and dance," Mackanic said.
