VIDEO: NJ Delegates Give Gov. Chris Christie High Marks for Keynote Speech
Party faithful say the governor hit all the right marks in his prime-time address to the nation.
In a speech that was both biographical and also touched upon Republicans' vision for the country, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie Tuesday was in the limelight Tuesday as he delivered a nationally televised keynote address at the Republican National Convention in Tampa.
And state delegates in the St. Pete Times Forum who listened to his speech said the governor struck just the right tone in making his case for presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

I thought it was a WONDERFUL speech. Perfection. How lucky we are to have a Republican as Governor in a Dem state where spending, taxes, costs of insurance, etc etc have been totally out of control for so long! I viewed the purpose of his intro was to set up that if Chris can make progress in a failing state like NJ, then the same might be able to have at the Fed level.

His speech was not about this election or this candidate in the least. His motives are to further his own career. I bet he is wishing Romney loses, because if he wins then Christie can't run in 2016... Romney would likely get the nomination to run for reelection. If he loses now, then Christie can run next time around. He will never get that far because he is a loudmouth bully and people across the country would see right through his tough guy antics....unfortunately many in NJ have been duped by his act.
David
12:52 am on Thursday, August 30, 2012
jack, I agree with you. Christie's speech was approximately 2400 words, but the name 'Romney' only came up 6 times. Conversely, in the speech, Christie mentions himself 60 times. The NY Post reported a few days ago that Christie declined running a Vice-President because he believes that Romney will likely lose.
Christie is looking at 2016. I'm not sure how he'll do as a President candidate. He's popular in New Jersey because of his willingness to deal with corruption and overspending, but I don't see that attracting votes nationwide. Christie is intelligent and speaks well, but he is a bully.
I know that some Republicans in Midwestern and Rocky Mountain states have stated that they do not like his aggressive New Jersey attitude. Furthermore, the media scrutiny for Presidential candidates is severe. If he calls people 'idiots' or 'jerks' while running for President, his candidacy will be quickly over.

I oftentimes wonder whether Americans' problems with straight talkers are that they either are unable to grasp the dire reality of the American economy (thank you public education) or they so desperately need to have their bottoms powdered when a public official speaks that the message is lost if "he isn't nice to me." For goodness sake, he's a Jersey boy who is rough around the edges and his trademark style is "damn the torpedoes." I personally find it refreshing and don't count on my Governor to make me "feel good" about myself. For that, I have family, friends, faith and most importantly, myself. For Jerseyans, I'm shocked when people mention he's too harsh. Have you ever been to a mall in this state and tried to fight for the last available parking spot at Christmas time? The kinder and gentler New Jerseyan is no where to be found yet they are "insulted" when their Governor shoots from the hip! I wish the RNC had unleashed him in the speech. I think he was tame, out of character and yes, he did not talk about Romney enough. I'm not so sure that he has any aspirations on the national stage other than being a spokesperson for the party. He strikes me as a realist. His style certainly would not sell to this high brow, passive, sophisticated American electorate whose interest is more about "feelings" than qualifications.

Donna, voters have consistently rewarded politicians that give them tax cuts, massive benefits, big and unfunded wars, and ask for no sacrifice. They reward leaders who treat them like children.
And when the leaders of this country do ask for sacrifice, they're gone. So what do you expect? Look at Ryan last night - he totally sold his beliefs out in order to have a shot to win. I just hope Christie can maintain his beliefs and purpose when he's up there in 2016.
Good point about the faux outrage regarding tone and style. The Cherry Hill mall parking lot isn't exactly Munchkinland.

Porter - I disagree with you about Paul Ryan "selling out" last night. He very effectively painted the stark reality of Obama's record. That was his role at this convention. He was articulate, likable, youthful and came across as a candidate who has a heartfelt grasp on the individual ingenuity on which this country was founded. He wasn't in the least bit apologetic for anything. He won the night! Policy details will come out during the debates. It'll be interesting to see what solutions (if any) and reference to the "success" of the current administration's record will be stressed during the Democrat national convention. Not a whole lot to sell the American public to make the argument of "4 more years" when the economy will be the ultimate yardstick by which Obama is measured.

He's now the defender of Medicare. He's now the guy that was pro Bowles-Simpson, instead of the man most responsible for killing it. His closing statement about protecting the vulnerable is the exact opposite of the philosophy - Ayn Rand - that he's openly and proudly trumpeted for years and years.
He's etch-a-sketching. He's an empty suit with no core beliefs. He might as well be John Kerry. In other words, a typical politician AND the kind of man that Chris Christie correctly called out the night before.
Hey, Christie may have been down by 10%, but he may have also been up by 10%. The play-it-safe, try to come in a close second strategy is - to me - embarrassing. And Joe Biden will now clean his clock given the contradictions between Paul's words and his previous actions.
Election is Obama's to lose, Ryan pick did zero. If looking good was all that Romney wanted, why not just get Ryan Lochte?

I mean, is medicare the biggest drain and cause of the deficit...or is it the best program ever that we have to fall on our swords to save? Or does the answer depend on the day of the week? Or does it depend on the audience? Or does it depend on if we're on national TV or Fox News.

Porter - I sense your hostility. With respect to the commission's report, Ryan's position was that the reforms would have accelerated the ill-conceived consequences and expenses of Obamacare. In April of this year, Erskine Bowles lauded Ryan's budget as "sensible" and "straightforward." At the same UNC forum, he was highly critical of Obama's budget describing it as very "back loaded" - hence, Obamacare. We KNOW what we have with President Obama. $6 trillion in added debt, states being sued by his justice department in those states' efforts to enforce immigration law, a partisan take over of the US medical system, handouts to campaign bundlers...and you're concerned about Paul Ryan? Honestly, when Ryan debates Joe Biden it won't even be a fair fight. For Biden's sake, I surely hope that hoof in mouth disease is covered under Obamacare.
Porterincollingswood
9:16 pm on Thursday, August 30, 2012
Not hostile in the least. I'll put it like this - I would have expected the speech Christie gave from Ryan, and vice-versa. So far, Christie and the Governor of NM are the only ones I've seen who look Presidential.
I find it odd that they took the Ryan brand attribute they saw as most valuable and marketable - his honesty and frankness about tough choices to be made - and failed to use it. Seemingly hiding it from the independent votes that were watching. And these are the people they need to get to win.
The debates are meaningless. The only people who watch them are decides who want to see their pre-existing opinions validated. We know this. They do a joke of a rating. The convention is speech is the opportunity to reach a mass audience. That's where you leverage what you can.
Ryan has already been caught lying about taking stimulus funds, now he leaves himself open on abortion and the debt. Unless you want to use a guy to his fullest, don't pick him.
That's Romney's fault, not Ryan's.
Donna Griffin
9:47 pm on Thursday, August 30, 2012
I'll level with you, Porter. I was initially nervous about the Ryan pick, but after last night...I can only hope he doesn't outshine Romney. The debates may not be watched as globally as they should, however, the running commentary does fall on many ears. Interestingly, I have 2 kids who have recently graduated colleges. When barbecuing out back with their friends (20-27 y.o.) this summer, I had the opportunity to ask them about the upcoming election. Out of 15 friends, 14 have chosen to not vote or switch their vote to "anyone but Obama." Every one of these kids voted for Obama 4 years ago. When I suggested to them that I guess it's the economy, some agreed. Ten of them, however, said that they were following their parents' leads. I found this startling. Their parents (diehard Democrats) will not be voting for their party's candidate. I'm fairly certain that Obama will carry NJ, but I believe it's going to be a heck of a lot closer than anyone thinks. Is Ryan the perfect VP choice? Probably not, but I think he is pretty darn close. He is relatable across a very broad spectrum. Obama is an utter failure. In fact, if you look up "utter failure" on Wikipedia I'm fairly certain his picture will be there.

I may be too hard on Ryan, but only because I found Christie's call for leadership and honesty and the will to govern and solve problems to be exactly what I want to hear. And then I hear the pre-packaged, focus-group-tested, boiler-plate BS from Ryan.
And young people saddled with massive student loan debt and a bad job market are right to ask questions (maybe they should start voting, as this country essentially has a policy of transferring wealth from young to old...because the latter votes en masse).
We'll see how it goes - I still can't believe that Obama is ahead given the economy and the spending advantage of his opponent. That, to me, is telling. PA is practically off the board. It's all about likability, and I'm sure you find that as frustrating now as I did in 2008 or Carter fans did in 1980.
If NJ is close, you probably aren't going to need it as you'll have won FL, OH, VA and maybe even WI.

Chris Christie's televised key-note speech shows just how charismatic he truly is as a speaker. I felt he tried to be true to himself and show what a Republican is. His unapologetic stance on New Jerseyians was and out bluntness or truths, was a way of saying this is who I am. He knocked it out of the park and did it both eloquently and with honesty. Yes I do think he took the opportunity to show the country who he is as well. It was a safe stance that was supportive but not gushing.

Travelers can accomplish the task. Applying for Medicaid benefits requires ID presentation. But your position is that it is "burdensome" and "disenfranchising" only when it comes to voting. Why is the necessity for IDs not "disenfranchising" in those other instances? What are you really saying? Should we have no standards to ensure the integrity of the American voting system? Is it beyond the realm of possibility to imagine that voter fraud has occurred in the past and will continue in the future? It is an ignorant position and I wonder what the left's end game really is? Perhaps voter fraud is the goal and unmasking it is not a part of the value system of the American left because it suits their needs.

Sue - Again, I have to ask you what the source of your hatred for men is? Please detail for me the "draconian" bias of the Republicans. Is it that the Romney/Ryan platform involves the creation of jobs and encourages personal responsibility? Is it that the reduction of the national debt is a priority? Is it that they are in favor of school choice so that young women in inner cities have an opportunity for a quality education and therefore a financially successful life? Is it that they have openly admitted (SHAME ON THEM) that the choice to be a stay-at-home Mom is a noble and important one? Or is it simply that they support life at all stages? Is it ever possible in your world for someone who is Pro-Choice to actually choose life? Pro-Choice is a misnomer. Their is no choice in their radical agenda. The movement should be more aptly named "Pro-Abortion."

Hell, even the republican party is currently running ads confirming that Obama inherited a bad situation.
But you know what, let's praise GOD. He is an American, ya know! He wants us good Americans to murder his Middle Eastern children. GOD BLESSES THE FAR RIGHT AND THEIR PLANS TO KILL THE MUSLIMS. It is good for Israel and that is all that matters.

50% of households, that's households - not taxpayers, pay no income tax. Do the homework before you post the stat.
Why don't 50% of households pay taxes? Because wages have stagnated and the number of deductions and tax cuts continues to increase.
So I suppose you're for a tax increase to address this problem? Or did you just step on your own talking-point foot?

I was watching Bill Moyers on NJTV last night... They did a story on The Nuns on the Bus. If you are not familiar, these are Catholic nuns that are traveling the country to highlight social inequity, poverty... At the end there was a debate between Sister Simone Campbell and a conservative pundit, who used the same numbers you have... Now having been educated at Augustinian Schools perhaps I have a different take on my role in society... But the fact is that everyone pays taxes. fact. This 50% pay no taxes is misleading and just plain false... If you have a job, you pay taxes, even the unemployed pay taxes on that money. Everyone pays sales taxes... and explain to me how someone making 24k a year could even afford to pay more then payroll taxes. The take home is 19k. That is just over $1600 a month. and very close to the poverty line.
Under the Romney Ryan plan... That family, even filed married and with two kids will pay close to $200 more a year... I think that is wrong.
And lets say you do well in life and make $500k a year... same situation, married two kids... Romney and Ryan will give you an additional 24k a year in tax cuts. So explain the morality of a $200 tax hike on a family struggling to get by, and a 24,000 cut for those doing well???

Fire Barry repeats the lie that is parroted all over the right wingnut blogosphere over and over and over and over. The lie: "50 percent pay zero." It's a lie and it's still a lie even if you utter it 2 million times a day. The working poor, who may be working at 1 or 2 part time jobs are paying wage taxes. How sad is that, decent honest hard working Americans are still poor even working at 2 part time jobs. They pay wage taxes, sales taxes, gas taxes, excise taxes, they pay rent or if they still have a home, they are paying property taxes, they may very well be paying state and local taxes. You do realize that many of the people not paying federal income taxes are poor seniors on Social Security or poor seniors in nursing homes. Many of the people not paying federal income taxes are the disabled who can no longer work, people on dialysis, people crippled by a tragic accident or seniors with Alzheimers or dementia. Just keep screaming the lie that "50 percent pay zero." What a commentary on the state of so many American workers, that their pay is so low that they pay little or no FEDERAL INCOME taxes BUT they PAY all the other taxes. This is why unions are so important, to fight for a living wage and decent benefits.

Joe R, of course the seniors, sick people, etc should be paying no fed income tax, and they don't. But if you're a married guy who owns a home, has a mortgage deduction (like over 65% of Americans), and takes the deduction for the kids/dependents, plus the many other deductions that the average household takes, you pay no Fed income tax after your deductions, even if you are pushing $100K/year. There are just so many deductions, loopholes (even for average earners) that the majority of households pay very little Fed income tax. I'm not a rich corp wife, I'm a full-time working widow with kids, but I really don't expect my rich neighbor to pay a super high tax rate so that I don't have to pay anything.
When it comes to Fed income tax, the only people who really pay are single people with no deductions and no mortgage on their home, and people making high six figures who no longer have kids at home. It's the big percentage of average households with house and kids who really aren't paying much of anything....again I'm only talking FED income tax. And Joe, of course everyone pays property tax, and most of that goes to pay for local schools, since lots of towns no longer get little state and Fed support. Anyway, there are no easy answers to the whole tax issue. It stinks for everyone.

Actually, SmallTown, that $100,000/year scenario is not accurate. They too pay....and handsomely even if they own a small business. I firmly support a flat tax (15% plus or minus) across the board for ANYONE receiving income. No loopholes, no deductions, no lengthy tax filing documents, no bloated federal bureaucracy of enforcement. When nearly 50% of wage earners pay NO federal income tax, the burden on the workforce is disproportionate. I also think that if EVERYONE has a financial obligation to Washington, they may pay closer attention to the consequences of elections and become a more informed electorate. There is something to be said about having skin in the game.

Donna, I totally agree with your flat tax approach, it's really the only way to eliminate all the games we have to play to make out tax hit as low as possible. When I was commenting about tax payers at $100K pay little in taxes, I was commenting on all the deductions they are legally allowed to take...deductions for kids, their mortgage interest, and if they own a small biz, they can expense their cars, cell phones, home office, insurance, etc etc to reduce their taxable income as low as possible. And I'm not against this, it's all legal, and I certainly use it myself, but I'm just saying that that is ONE of the reasons why we end up with not enough tax revenue to cover the Fed bills (and of course outrageous wasteful programs and spending are the other side of the problem). But see the dems will say that the 15% flat tax really hits the average guy making $30K-$50K who needs every penny to pay for his cell phone, DVR, big car and credit card bill...and of course to pay for the $100K in student loans that he took so he could get his $30K job. Donna, there are just more problems than any Fed administration can handle. Cause many of the problems rest with how individuals live, work (or don't work), and spend, and expect the government to deliver a safety net to everyone. Exasperating.

SmallTown - I'm on board with much of what you say. I am a small business owner with kids and a HEALTHY federal tax liability despite all legal deductions. My position is still that taxes must be a sacrifice we make across the board at all income levels. Without that "shared" sacrifice, there is no incentive to become an informed electorate. Just look at the local outrage over property tax increases. Property owners became knowledgeable real quickly regarding the tax appeal process because it directly impacted their wallets. Living within one's means is a responsibility which this nation has forgone at the federal, state and local levels for a few decades. That philosophy has trickled down to families who are faced with record debt loads and no expectation of repayment. The thing even more shocking is that families have NO idea how they got to where they are and don't find it "fair" that they should satisfy their debts. It has become part of our culture and quite frankly for those of us playing by the rules, it is infuriating. The class warfare spewed by members of the left is immoral and does nothing to foster personal responsibility.

Yes, Fire Barry, the deficit is out of control, we've thrown so much money down the sink holes of government, there is truly no way to solve most of the problems we are now faced with, but few people want to admit that. Even if Romney is elected, where will millions of new jobs come from? We're never going to have gobs of new manufacturing...those jobs are gone for good. We're not going to have tons of new retail stores....we're all buying more and more of our basic goods online. We're not even going to produce more service jobs...walk into any bank and how many people are physically working there? Most of our economy's goods and services are shifting to being delivered online....all of those traditional jobs are gone for good. Even education will eventually be delivered more and more online, because who can go in debt $100K or more for a college degree with no guarantee of a job....so who will employ thousands and thousands of out-of-work educators? Even with strong Republicans in office, exactly where will the millions of high-paying jobs come from?? Public sector workers pay for their pensions, over the decades they have paid billions into the pension fund. The state (under D or R governors) has put little or nothing into the pension fund, so you are not paying for the pensions. The money that should have gone into the pension fund was used to balance the budget or give tax breaks to millionaires. So just say thank you to the pension fund. Social Security really still is taking in more than it gives out because you must consider that it is earning interest. The SS trust fund is worth $2.7 TRILLION and it earns interest - that's from the SS web site. SS includes survivors' benefits and disability insurance which will be there for you if, God forbid, you became disabled at age 45 and could no longer work.

You are the classic loser who wants to be a Republican because you know you have one toe in the water of poverty yourself and you think if you call yourself a Republican and bad mouth the poor it will prevent you from being one of the poor. But, Buddy - one serious illness - one bad auto accident and you are just another poverty stricken person wishing you had some food stamps. It could happen to anyone of the 99% and you, Buddy. It could be you any minute.

Jennifer - You are clearly not one of those "tolerant" Democrats. That tolerance does not translate well to those who happen to disagree with you on just about every level politically. Again, just as you want to throw the dart at those mean Republican men who hate women and minorities and want to govern your womb, I might suggest that you have a history lesson. In the 26 major civil rights votes after 1933, a majority of Democrats opposed civil rights legislation in over 80 percent of the votes. By contrast, the Republican majority favored civil rights in over 96 percent of the votes. You see, African Americans would not have had the right to vote had it been for the likes of Democrat men, like Al Gore's father for instance. BTW...the 19th Amendment (Women's Suffrage) was passed, again, by a majority of Republican men. Lastly, how is it that Democrat policies have helped the poor out of their station in life? With all the social legislation, it seems that the poor are poorer, education is worse, taxes across the board are higher, and generational poverty is more persistent than it has ever been since these programs came to be back in the 50's and 60's. Judge your party on its policy results, not its policy's intentions.

In my opinion 'the lowest of the low' are the ones who resort to name calling when they do not have the facts on their side.
In 1919, the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives passed the 19th Amendment, according women the right to vote. 85% of Republicans voted in favor, nearly half the Democrats voted against a woman's right to vote. Known as the "Susan B. Anthony Amendment", it had been introduced into congress in 1878 by Senator Aaron Sargent (R-CA).
Yes - we may all be one catastrophe from poverty, but one more auto bailout from all of us being in poverty.
And Republicans do not want to 'dictate reproductive rights' - they do not want taxpayers to pay for other people's contraceptive choices or to federally mandate abortions for hospitals with religious affiliation. Contraception is cheap and abortion is legal - what you want is for me to pay for the first one and agree with the morality of the second one. And that is the foundation of dictatorship.

Jennifer, I read thru all the posts, and I really didn't see anyone bad-mouthing the poor. What comment are you referring to? I think it's a fact that the uneducated and 'those who don't have too much' generally vote democratic, and who would fault them for that, since Democrats want more and more social welfare programs and entitlements? Virtually every minority group votes cleanly Democrat....so do most people who are on food stamps...65% of people on food stamps are non-white. But you are saying those poverty stricken, uneducated "want to be Republicans" ?? Please explain more.

Smot, I based it on Dept of Ag website numbers, but ok use your 42% white number...so 58% are non-white...still a hugely disproportionate number. And with regards to comments about 'undeducated'....I was replying to Jennifer's comments about 'uneducated' voting Republican, and wondering how she arrived at that. I have no beef with Food Stamps...that's one basic entitlement that needs to be kept as a solid program. But we still need to do what it takes to get less people on FS not MORE people. Smot, the problems are so huge, and we're so far down the tubes that I'm very skeptical as to what can be done. Continuing down the path of more and more dependence on a failing government just doesn't make very much sense to me.

Smoot,
Want to talk about food stamp facts? There are indeed a lot more whites on food stamps than before. Obama did away with the restrictions on resources a person is allowed to own. A person can now live in a McMansion and have several nice cars in their 3 car garage, boat in the driveway, etc. Eligibility is now based on income only. If a person can hide their income either legally or not they can get food stamps. Nice plan. Get people used to entitlements so they will be more likely to vote for him.

The Republicans stood in the way of women getting the vote for 30 years. The Republicans (VP candidate for one) want to change the definition of rape - how about that-they want to make a distinction between rape and "forcible" rape. I thought rape was rape. They want to take a woman's right to choose away. They want to take away funding from womens' health organizations. Eleanor, I am pretty sure from reading various posts of yours, that you are about 85 years old - maybe you could call Clint Eastwood and both of you can talk to an empty chair because both of you are irrelevant in todays world.

Referring to Eleanor. I am shocked when women defend the Republicans and support them but figure these women must be very old because young women have too much information and too much self respect. The Republican Party is outdated, thankfully. They are not inclusive. A bunch of old white men - Clint Eastwood was a perfect choice for the convention. I remember when Charleton Heston - old and demented, spoke at the Republican Convention. The Republican Party needs to speak to the times and to all of the people and they certainly do not. They speak to Clint and Eleanor.

Now they stupidly chase the endorsements from crooked "men of god" and sold the soul of the party to crazed bible thumpers who suffer from delusions of grandeur. Donna and Eleanor - You both hang your hat on legitmate, good legislation republican legislatures have supported. But you refer to legislation passed quite a while ago when the republicans (and the democrats) were very different from how they have been over the last couple of decades at least. Those parties, particularly the republican pary, are not the parties they are today. I wish the republican party was still reasonable, practical, fair-minded, and more concerned about improving the nation than it is about getting and holding power. I used to vote for those republicans. Also worth mentioning: Based on your comments, it seems to me that you would not support that earlier incarnation of the republican party which you use to defend the current version. You would oppose it with the same stridency you oppose the democratic party.
Donna Griffin

Jon - Exactly which policy proposed by the Republican Party actually harms women? Is it a balanced budget achieved through responsible spending? Is it increased job creation which therefore reduces unemployment rates? Is it a reduction in the national debt? Is it school choice enabling those in the poorest performing districts the opportunity for a better education? Or is the matter of personal responsibility morally reprehensible to you? I find it amusing that you allude to finding our current administration "reasonable, practical, fair-minded, etc." You see, I do not define these issues by gender. They are America's problems which have grown to frightening proportions under our current "leadership." How deep of a hole are you prepared to dig for your children to climb into? I, for one, am hoping for some change come November.
Patrick

What balanced budget? The Contract with America was in 1994. Since, Republicans have spent like drunken sailors. And jobs? really... what has any elected member of Congress done about jobs? they haven't even put forth a bill.
Its nice to have all of these platitudes to point at and say we stand for THAT, but none of it is ever enacted in the real world... In Congress you had a tea party Congress ignore the debt and take on social issues... You had a tea party Congress that let the debt ceiling debate linger on so long that our nations credit rating was down graded. These is the reality of what the Republican party has done since taking over the House.
Donna Griffin
2:20 pm on Sunday, September 2, 2012
Really, Patrick? President Obama and Harry Reid are Capt. and Co-Capt. of the "spend like drunken sailor" division of that ship. By the end of his term in office, Pres. Obama "will have added nearly as much public debt as all the prior presidents combined." What exactly are the details of the budget passed by the current administration? Oh, that's right, we haven't had one of those. Just another constitutional obligation this administration chooses to ignore. Despite the fact that President Obama had majorities in both Houses early in his administration, he was unable to accomplish ANY reduced spending or national debt reduction policy. Seems to me that the only thing he did manage to accomplish was increasing that debt burden for hard-working (at least for those of us who still have jobs) Americans. When does ANYTHING that has occurred in the last 4 years become the responsibility of the current administration?
Patrick
3:05 pm on Sunday, September 2, 2012
This morning I was watching Fox News.... And It's funny Brit Hume said nearly the same thing about the debt and the first two years... The first two years distortion is that while they had majorities, there is this thing called a filibuster, and a super majority... 60 votes in the Senate. So there was no open route to legslation.
As for the debt, have you actually looked at how much of the debt truly is of Obama's hand? Cause if you had you would realize that the majority of the dentist he Bush tax cuts and two unfounded wars. And TARPwhich was branded by Hume this morning as a fund meant to every Democrat's pork desires, was in fact not even close to what was needed by most economists. Nor what we need to fix our rapidly aging infrastructure. And just so you know, the Romeny Ryan plan does nothing to kill the debt. In fact it is projected to expand it. If you don't believe me. Google it.
Fact is taxes are the lowest they have been in decades, and government smaller under Obama then Bush. Facts. Reality. Again, don't believe it, google it.

So, Patrick...you find that the Obama administration has worked wonders on our economy? Do not lump me in with Bush defenders either. There is plenty of blame to go around, but there comes a point when a reasonable person has to say...we must stop the bleeding and the current administration is merely giving the patient more blood thinners. Obama made promises, which he broke. If Romney breaks his promises, he too will be out of a job the next election cycle. Jon - the Democrat party of old has gone through some transformations as well...simply ask Artur Davis. It is experience in all matters economic that will drive me to the voting booth this November. The current fraternity in the executive branch is inexperienced, unwilling to learn from history and destroying the fiscal future of my children. Time to clean house. Nuff said!
Louissa
9:12 am on Sunday, September 2, 2012
Yes the Republican Party maybe used to be fiscally conservative but look at what they did during the Bush years - cut taxes and spent spent spent. And Eleanor, do you think Obama did the wrong thing when he bailed out the US auto industry? That shows how totally out of whack you are - for one, it is the most important manufacturing left in the US - letting it go would have caused even more unemployment - and GM paid back every dime! Eleanor, sit in your rocking chair and knit or something or talk to the empty chair next to you like your buddy, Clint.
Donna Griffin

Louissa - You may want to check your GM facts. No doubt, $3.2 billion is a big number in GM's profits' posting. But an even bigger number is $60 billion. That’s what this administration and the last one together sank into GM (not to mention another $20 billion or so they dumped into Chrysler). When President Obama gave GM this money, he insisted that it was not a handout but an “investment” that would cost taxpayers “not a dime." But if there was ever any doubt that this wasn’t going to happen, earnings' reports dispel it. For starters, included in the $3.2 billion figure is the net $1.5 billion that the company generated from the one-time sale of Delphi, its auto parts supplier, and Ally Financial, its financial arm. Subtract that, and its performance looks much less impressive, especially compared to its rival Ford that really didn’t receive a dime from taxpayers yet made $2.6 billion last quarter—or nearly a billion more than GM. For Bush and Obama, the bailout was an epic failure.
Eleanor

@Louissa - I am not 85 or anywhere near it but I hope to be some day and since I look forward to that as something to aspire to I do not share your left wing contempt for the elder generation. The two bastions of liberalism - left wing politics and Hollywood - seem to regard getting older as a nuisance at best and a shameful thing to be eliminated at worst. The Obamanomic view of eldercare and the employment statistics for Hollywood actors and writers and producers are pretty much the same. If you are older you are useless, can't contribute to the conversation, have a fixed view of life, etc, etc - ageism is acceptable bigotry to them!
As for your stats - GM bailout was a fraud - a bailout with the taxpayers dollar that GM can only pay back by securing more long term funding and drawing on Peter to pay Paul and keeping sales figures up by floating subprime loans - the same strategy that collapsed the housing market. Only this summer it was reported that 79% of GM sales were fleet (that is government) purchases.
As for human rights - the republicans that supported the womens right to vote and civil rights when Democrats tried to block it. Republicans led the way in electing female governors and Reagan nominated the first female Supreme Court justice. I would rather get behind a party who supported life, respected it into old age and historically stood up for the disenfranchised than the democrats who look at me like one more cradle-to-grave dependent 'Julia'.

* 1914: DEMOCRATS block the right of women to vote AGAIN.
* 1915: DEMOCRATS defeat the measure again (204 to 174)
* 1919: REPUBLCANS win a landslide in Congress. Due in part to DEMOCRATS getting us into WWI. The REPUBLICAN MAJORITY gets the 19th Amendment passed.

And Yes Wilson was against the 19th amendment until Suffragists where arrested for protesting outside the White House, and beaten and treated otherwise unjustly and when that became a public outrage, he switched his position.
But how does that have any bearing on the politics of 2012? You are making similar arguments as Romney and Ryan... Take a portion of the truth, spin it into a web of an argument and think that simply by saying something enough people will believe it.

3:13 pm on Sunday, September 2, 2012
@Johnnie Jay. Did Lincoln and the republicans fight the Civil War to abolish slavery? No. Lincoln made it clear he had nothing but contempt for “negroes”. His Emancipation proclamation only freed slaves in states that were in rebellion (not slaves in Union states like NJ) and expired at the end of the civil war since Lincoln did not sign it as president but as commander of the army. The slaves were not freed until the 12th amendment was passed literally 8 months later over Lincoln’s dead body.
You debate like that Karl Rove. You accuse, and accuse. You have no interest in intelligent discussion because you are an obstructionist. Johnnie a debate is a two way street. And from your responses it is obvious that the truth does hurt you. The beauty of being far right for you is you can claim god forgives your stupidity.

6:38 am on Monday, September 3, 2012
Ric, you probably need to check your facts better. It was the 13th Amendment that freed the slaves, not the 12th. President Lincoln absolutly did not hold negroes in contempt. While he did not feel the negro race was the equal to the caucasian race, he had a great empathy for slaves. Your statement about the Emancapation Proclamation is also not entirely correct. It actually reads "within any State or designated part of a State", There were parishes in Louisiana and counties in Virginia (later to become West Viginia) where slvery was left untouched.

You have a blue collar background - you are ashamed of and you want to pretend that someday you will be part of the 1% and then maybe you can evade income taxes, deny rights of the poor, take away food stamps, deny poor women reproductive rights, stand up and dictate who will eat - who will have health insurance ----- oh someday Joe the Plumber when you make $500,000 or so per year, you too can evade income tax and spit on those beneath you. Good luck with that - Joe the Plumber or John Jay --- it ain't gonna happen for you - sucker

Ric, Your knowledge of Charlton Heston is laughable too! You get Louissa's dunce cap now!
* Campaigned for Democrat Adlai Stevenson (1956);
* Campaigned for Democrat John F. Kennedy in 1960;
* Steadfast civil rights suporter;
* Picketed a segregated movie theater (showing his movie El Cid) and segregated restaurants (1961);
* Marched with Martin Luther King, Jr. to the great rally in Washington D.C. (1963) [Side note: I have a moving photo of Heston and Burt Lancaster at the rally in my collection];
* Supported the 1968 Gun Control Act following the assassination of Robert Kennedy;
* Opposed the Vietnam War (1969)
When the Democrats turned radical in the 1970s, he stated "I didn't change. The Democratic party changed." So he made the switch to the Republican Party.
Life stinks, doesn't it, Ric?

I was there in Philadelphia when Charlton Heston said the following:
"... Mr. Clinton, sir, America didn't trust you with our health-care system. America didn't trust you with gays in the military. America doesn't trust you with our 21-year-old daughters, and we sure, Lord, don't trust you with our guns."

Donna - You did not respond to my points. Either you misread them, read them correctly and chose to respond off point, or you ignored them. I'll give it another shot in other words - words more straightforward: You defend the current republican party by creditting it for its actions a long time ago. That party is not at all like the current party (which lost its collective mind when Clinton was elected in 1992 and has been riding the crazy train to oblivion since.). So you defend a group by giving it credit earned by a group that is not at all like the group you defend except for its name and other institutional constance. You are not alone in this reckless logic - your fellow Rs love to associate the party with historic people whose policies and actions would prevent them from winning a republican primary in the current party. Lincoln and Reagan are examples. They would be demonized today. What is at issue in this comment stream is what the parties do now.

Here is Louissa's lie: "Louissa 8:05 am on Sunday, September 2, 2012 The Republicans stood in the way of women getting the vote for 30 years."
Here is the truth:
* 1854: Getting women the right to votes dates back to the GOP's founding;
* 1878: California REPUBLICAN A.A. Sargent introduced the 19th Amendment but the DEMOCRAT-controlled Congress buried it in committee for DECADES;
**** DEMOCRAT President Woodrow Wilson STRONGLY opposed the right of women to vote and was FORCED to change position. The DEMOCRATS and WILSON were also behind getting African Americans thrown out of federal jobs and had "Jim Crow" laws enacted to keep them out of government.

As for Communists: I call them like I see them:
* Obama's policies are right out of the Communist Manifesto:
1. Abolition of property in land and application of all rents of land to public purposes.
2. A heavy progressive or graduated income tax.
3. Abolition of all right of inheritance.
4. Confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels.
5. Centralisation of credit in the hands of the State, by means of a national bank with
State capital and an exclusive monopoly.
6. Centralisation of the means of communication and transport in the hands of the State.
7. Extension of factories and instruments of production owned by the State; the bringing into cultivation of waste-lands, and the improvement of the soil generally in accordance with a common plan.
8. Equal liability of all to labour. Establishment of industrial armies, especially for agriculture.
9. Combination of agriculture with manufacturing industries; gradual abolition of the distinction between town and country, by a more equitable distribution of the population over the country.
10. Free education for all children in public schools.*
* Public education is fine, but the Left Wing in the United States wormed their way into public education and has fought a relentless war to brainwash America's children. More about this later...

Issa said to Chris Wallace, “No, we don’t. "During a Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing today on Capitol Hill, Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer, who is facing pressure surrounding his role in the Obama Justice Department’s Operation Fast and Furious, asked for more gun control and blamed law abiding gun shop owners for violence in Mexico."
Breuer declared that nearly 70 percent of guns found in Mexico come from the United States, a figure that has been disproven by the National Rifle Association, FactCheck.org, PolitiFact and by Senator Charles Grassley’s office multiple times. Also during testimony, Democratic Senator Diane Feinstein pushed for more gun control and Breuer expressed his agreement with her statements that American gun laws are too “lax” and therefore result it more violent crime."

Obama is a disgrace! Unemployment in America continues to increase( 15% + is the real number); The unemployment rate in America has been above 8% for the last 43 months (longer then any president since the depression). Obama has been President for the last 45 months.
Could it be he doesnt care about the 47%, only the 1%? hmmmm

Trish: There are two things working against Christie:
1) Obama is in the position to move and ENTIRE NATION with his policies and political appointments. It goes from the top down. Obama's policies of tax and spend isn't working. There is no such thing as a nation that taxed itself into prosperity. Period.
The economic policies of Obama are a failure -- and those failures have a direct affect on New Jersey's already fragile economy.
2) The corruption and rediculous regulatory conditions in New Jersey. Everything we touch is affected by dirty crooks and inept policies that go unchecked (with a few exceptions, of course).
Hopefully the Democrats will get thrown out so that we Christie and the Republicans can go corruption hunting and gut much of this useless regulatory machine that is killing our businesses.

Don't you find it a little ironic that Mr. Corruption Hunter missed the biggest target in the entire state?

try looking for corruption in your own back yard. christie could not give a crap about you (unless your part of the 1% john jay?, which i suspect your are) the fact of the matter is that the 99% are the ones that have built this country and support it with our tax dollars. while it might seem that the 1% pay alot, the reality is that with out the 99% the 1% would be nothing. in the words of your lord and master chris christie you are a bunch of moronic nincumpoops! romney has already ruined his chances THANK GOODNESS!

mtwnres, two questions: (i) not making excuses, but could it be that unemployment exceeds all prior presidents because not of them had to govern during a mini-Depression; and (ii) what is Romney's plan to get the American economy growing again?
To Chief Justice Jay, is your last comment supposed to imply that the Republican party operates completely above board? Because that would be funny.

@Joe - if you hired a person to do a job, and at the end of 4 years he said:
I know I've improved nothing. But you see, the guy before me left a huge mess and my employees won't work for me. In fact all they do is fight with each other as things get worse. Constantly blaming each other for the growing mess.
My response would be. I know the guy before you left a mess. You convinced me you could fix it. You also told me you'd be just the guy to get all your employees working together again. You've failed on all accounts. And you've put me further in debt. In fact, I can't think of one thing that is better today then when I hired you 4 years ago. But I can certainly find many that are worse.
You're fired.
Romneys plan - probably no different then Obamas since they are both worthless candidates. It's like getting to pick which pile of sh*t you'd rather step in.
It's depressing to think that of all the brilliant people in this country, we get these two idiots to chose from.

lets not forget that christie has done nothing! just because he SAYS we are in an upswing, does not make it so. i might say i can pay my bills, but can i? NO the republicans who continually block obama are the number 1 reason he has been unable to accomplish anything. they have said from the very beginning that their goal is to make sure obama does not get re-elected, NO MATTER WHO THEY DAMAGE IN THE PROCESS. They don't care about you , me or the other 47%, only themselves and continuing their crap. obama may not be the best choice but he is clearly a better choice than rommney

I wasn't implying anything. There are good and bad in each party -- the problem I have is the that the Democrats are trying to portray themselves as being "clean" -- and they are not.
The present administration has huge issues that range from murder (Fast and Furious), to sexual harassment (See DHS and Napalitano), to fraud (See ACORN), to civil liberties (See NDAA).
Obama's term is a MESS -- will Romney fix things? I hope so, but I've heard the same song and dance.
I can tell you that at a state and local level, the corruption has to end. The utterly corrupt Democratic machines in areas like Camden and Hudson counties have to go. I don't care if they jail the entire governing body -- corruption is KILLING this state and this nation.

...also what's killing this state. . .is the ever growing costs of government and education, especially higher education?

So Trish, it's OK for Obama to jail Americans without a judge, lawyer -- just based on someone's allegation, correct?
