Councilman Walsh Lone Candidate For June Primary

One-year Unexpired term up for grabs

Former Mayor and current Councilman Robert Walsh was the only candidate to file a petition to run in the June 4 primary for the November elections.  Walsh, who was appointed to fill the seat vacated when current Mayor Bill Gotto was elected in November, will run to fill the seat for the remainder of Gotto's unexpired term.  Before the November elections Walsh opted not to seek another term as mayor. In three months since his appointment to the council he said it has been a good experience. "I enjoy serving the people of Howell Township," he said. "It's a pleasure. It hasn't been a job." Councilman Walsh also said when he was appointed he committed to run again for the remainder of the term. "I knew it would be for at least two years and …

Walsh didn't want to run for Mayor because he said he wanted to spend more time with his family, then he decided to run for Freeholder (I guess it's not as time consuming as Mayor), but didn't get the nod for Freeholder so he turns around and settles for councilman in Howell? I'm still trying to figure out where his priorities are? And Ray, I'm kinda jumping on the journalism is dead bandwagon. …   more ›

Christie, Springsteen and Bon Jovi: Perfect Together?

The governor gives kudos to the two rock stars for helping with Hurricane Sandy recovery, politics aside.

The Jersey Shore area may be known as the land of Springsteen and Bon Jovi. Springsteen has a home in Rumson and Bon Jovi lives in the Navesink section of Middletown. Both are known to show up to support many a cause in the area, including Democratic political campaigns. Neither one has supported Republican Gov. Chris Christie. And Christie is an openly avid Boss fan. But, the two rockers have set politics aside to pool resources to save the Jersey Shore and have been appointed by Christie's wife, Mary Pat, to the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund Advisory Board.  Bon Jovi came to Sea Bright to see the progress with Sea Bright Rising's tent/food city in the wake of Sandy. The governor has made several stops to Sea Bright as well. When…

Poll Shows Chris Christie Has Huge Lead In Governor's Race

A Quinnipiac University poll released this week shows Chris Christie with a big lead over his Democratic challenger, state Sen. Barbara Buono.

Gov. Chris Christie is the best person to lead New Jersey over the next four years, according to voters recently polled in a survey released this week by Quinnipiac University. Christie, a Republican, leads his Democratic rival, state Sen. Barbara Buono (D-Middlesex), 62 percent to 25 percent in the state's 2013 gubernatorial race, according to the poll.  The governor's overall approval rating also remains high. Christie's 74 percent approval rating and 69 percent favorable rating tie his personal record highs from January, the Huffington Post reports, both numbers buoyed by public perception of the way he handled Hurricane Sandy's impact and its aftermath.  Christie appears to have strong support on the other side of the aisle, as well.  …

Fire District Election Results Vary Across Howell

Low turnout in some districts, higher in others

There are five districts in Howell and each was open on Saturday for the annual fire district elections. For the Southard Fire House it was an eventful few hours and the final results were not known until Monday morning. Southard was more the exception than the rule as others like the Squankum house saw less than two dozen residents come in and cast their votes.  There were six candidates for two seats on the Board of Chosen Fire Commissioners running from the Southard house. According to results provided by board clerk Frank Puccio the two winners were Doug Hesselbarth with 194 votes and Francis W. Pawlowski with 182 votes. The race came down to one vote separating second and third place as Arthur Esposito received 181 votes and Robert …

Union Beach does not have a fire district nor does it have commissioners, the title Fire Commissioner is for an elected official to said district, there are no volunteer commissioners. Their budget is only 125,000 because that is all the town gives them. The rest of the fire tax that the citizens of that town are paying don't go where are supposed to go, they go into the general fund. If Union …   more ›

All districts seem to be keeping with minimal increases except for Ramtown District #4. According to the 2 articles in 2012 they asked for $907,693 and this year they are asking for $1,584,267. That's an increase of $676,574. Am I reading this correctly? What is the story on this? What are their capital expenses? I know it's only a tax increase of $70,246 to taxpayers, just wondering what the …   more ›

Poll: Should Cory Booker Run for Gov. or Senate?

Newark Mayor Cory Booker hints at his political future. You tell us: What position should he go after?

Newark Mayor Cory Booker, who increasingly finds himself on the national political stage, has a decision to make: run for governor or run for U.S. Senate? Booker, 43, said he's considering both, and will make a decision in the next two weeks, according to the Huffington Post. Speculation has swirled that Booker would seek higher office as his political star starts to shine brighter. Party officials gave him a coveted speaking spot at this year's Democratic National Convention and moves such as living off of the same allotment as food stamp recipients for a week garnered national attention. Now the question is: Which office will he seek and who will he run against? If he goes for governor and wins the Democratic primary, he'll almost …

How is there always a camera around when he does something newsworthy. And why would he risk the lives of his security detail last year by running into a burning building? Bruno Awaits FRHSD Election Results

Write-in campaign results expected this week

At Monday's meeting of the Freehold Regional High School District Board of Education Howell representative Bill Bruno was conducting business as usual.  Three weeks after Election Day Bruno is still awaiting results but preliminary returns from the county show he is leading a group of five possible candidates for the seat. "I know I'm serving until January so in that framework I'm working on what I can control up to that point," he said.  With a total of 228 votes for him prior to the provisional ballots being counted the county had him leading Evelyn O'Donnell who received 146 votes so far. Other votes were cast for Scott Moses who received 53 votes, Chochise Doucette who received 45 votes and Thomas DiPaolo who received 39 votes.  Bruno …
