Local, County and State Elections on Tuesday Ballot

A look at events happening in Howell on Tuesday November 5, 2013.

It is Election Day in Howell and local residents have the chance to cast their votes in not only local and school elections but also county and state races as well.

At the local level there is a seat on the Howell Council for a one year unexpired term. The seat is currently held by Republican Councilman Robert Walsh. He is facing Democrat Cochise Doucette to fill the remainder of the seat formerly held by Mayor Bill Gotto.

There are three seats up for grabs on the Howell Board of Education. Incumbents Suzanne Brennan, Mary Cerretani and Jeannette Smith are all running to hold onto their seats. Also vying for the seats are Mark Bonjavanni, Ryan Klauder, Evelyn O’Donnell and Anna Kristjansdottir.

There is also a seat on the Freehold Regional High School District with Amy Fankhauser and James Truszkowski running to represent the township at the regional level.

Longtime State Senator Robert Singer is being challenged for his seat in Trenton by Howell resident William Field while Republican Assemblymen Sean Kean and Dave Rible are being opposed by Democrats Lorelei Rouvrais and Jimmy Esposito.

Howell resident Shaun Golden is running for another term as Monmouth County Sheriff on the Republican ticket and is being challenged by Democrat Ruben Scolavino. Also at the county level Republican Freeholders Thomas Arnone and Serena DiMaso are being challenged by Democrats Brian Froelich and Larry Luttrell.

There are also three seats up for grabs in Farmingdale including one full term and one unexpired term. Republicans Michael Romano and George Dyevoich are seeking the full term against Democrats Carly Immen and Jan Zientek. Councilman William “Beau” Byrtus is running for the one year unexpired term against Republican Don Steinfeld.

The National Weather Service is calling for a mostly cloudy day with a high near 51 which should make for a clear day at the polling places around town. The low for tonight is expected to be near 41 according to  the forecast for the day. Not only is today Election Day, it is also Gunpowder Day.

On this date in 1872 suffragist Susan B. Anthony was fined $100 for attempting to vote in the Presidential election. Woodrow Wilson was elected president in 1912 and Parker Brothers began selling the board game Monopoly in 1935. Famous birthdays today include singer Art Garfunkel, basketball hall of famer Bill Walton and singer Bryan Adams.
