Gustnado Confirmed in Jackson on Monday

Powerful storm included heavy rains, strong wind as well as thunder and lightning.

The powerful storm that ripped through our area on Monday included an unusual phenomenon just across the border in Jackson according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

A day after the storm passed a team from the NWS was in Jackson just outside of Cedar Glen West and confirmed that at approximately 5:10 p.m. on Monday night a Gustnado with winds up to 60 MPH tore through the area. The gustnado brought down several trees and also caused some roof damage to local homes in the area.

The NWS defined a gustnado as “a small whirlwind which forms an eddy in thunderstorm overflows.” There is no connection with cloud based rotation and are not classified as tornadoes. They are classified as “thunderstorm wind events,” that can cause similar damage to a weak tornado.
