Thanks to grant money from Monmouth County Howell Township will be able to add more than seven acres to its existing open space rolls.
The township was recently announced as one of the recipients of a 2012 Monmouth County Municipal Open Space Grant. This is the tenth time the grant has been awarded with 23 applications seeking more than $3.8 million according to information provided by Township Manager Helene Schlegel.
Howell Township was awarded $98 thousand, the full amount applied for to help with the purchase of the Van Schoick property. Schlegel said the purchase of the 7.27 acre property, which is next to the 800 acre Bear Swamp Natural Area, "meets the program's goal to acquire, preserve and improve land for park, recreation and open space purchases.
