Recreation Department Bringing the Silver Screen and Mother Nature Together

First of two outdoor movies to be held this week.

For most Howell residents, the hill that stretches between the library and Town Hall is known to be one of the best places to head to for sledding in the winter.

After a season where there seemed to be an endless supply of white powder to zip down the hill just a few months ago, the recreation department is providing residents with a reason to come back to the hill that does not require a hat and gloves.

On Thursday night at approximately 9 p.m. a 40 foot screen will be erected on the hill for a showing of the popular comedy "Little Fockers." The latest edition of the series starring Ben Still and Robert DeNiro will begin as soon as it is dark enough to be seen on the mammoth screen.

Davide Fuoco, the director of the Parks and Recreation Department said the hill is a great spot for families to come out and enjoy a night of entertainment under the stars. "It's the perfect location for a movie," he said. Much like the movie theaters residents might go to, Fuoco said the hill provides a natural stadium seating environment so the movie can be seen from the best vantage points.

Fuoco said even though it is a relatively new phenomenon in the town, the outdoor moving showings have already become a popular staple of the summer season. "It's a Howell event and we want to make it special and unique," he said. Depending on the movie shown, Fuoco said anywhere from 250 to 300 people come out to enjoy the show. He expects an even larger crowd than that to come out on Aug. 4 when Toy Story 3 will be shown on the big silver screen.

For those who come to the movie there will be a vendor on the scene selling all sorts of sweet treats before the show, but movie goers are also encouraged to bring their favorite movie sweets to enjoy in a truly unique theater.

With several hundred people expected to attend the event parking will be available at Town Hall, the nearby recreation building as well as the Department of Public Works and the library and police department parking lots. Fuoco said if needed the lots used by the Howell Central Little League can also be used if there are spots available.

The National Weather Service is predicting a beautiful summer night on Thursday with a high of 83 during the day and a low of 64 at night so bringing a blanket to drape over your chair may be a good idea if you are so inclined.

Should the forecast change and it looks like inclement weather, residents are encouraged to call the recreation department at 732-938-4500 ext. 2501. Howell Patch will also have an update should the show be cancelled. More information about the Movies in the Park program can be found here.
