Library to Feature the Works of Elizabeth Taylor

This August, the Howell Township Library's "Thursday Afternoon at the Movies" series will celebrate the work of the late, famed actress Elizabeth Taylor.

On March 23 of this year, one of the world’s most renowned actresses, Elizabeth Taylor, died at the age of 79. She left behind a critically lauded body of work, and to honor the actress, the Howell Township Public Library will dedicate its August “Thursday Afternoon at the Movies,” series in her name.

All of the selections for “Thursday Afternoon at the Movies,” will be shown at 1 p.m. at the library.

On August 4, the 1944 film National Velvet will be shown. The movie stars Taylor as a 12-year old who saves a horse and helps to train it to compete for the prestigious Grand National race.  This movie also stars Mickey Rooney and Angela Lansbury, and is roughly two hours long.

On August 11, the 1958 movie Cat on a Hot Tin Roof will be shown. This film stars Taylor in the role of Maggie “The Cat,” in a drama about life in the south, which also stars Paul Newman and Burl Ives. This movie is based off of the Broadway show of the same name and was nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. It is 108 minutes long.

On August 18, the 1950 picture Father of the Bride will be shown. This movie features Taylor in a comedy about a father, played by acclaimed actor Spencer Tracy, who is cautious about seeing his daughter get married. This film was actually remade in 1991 into a popular comedy starring Steve Martin. The 1950 version being shown at the library clocks in at 93 minutes long.

On August 25, perhaps Taylor’s best known film will be shown, the 1966 classic Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? This picture stars Taylor and Richard Burton as Martha and George, a couple in a troubled relationship on a campus in New England. This film was directed by Mike Nichols and won six Academy Awards, including the Best Actress Award for Taylor. Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf is rated PG and is 129 minutes long.
