Local Pastor and Humanitarian to be Keynote Speaker for YMCA Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Breakfast

Pastor Terrence K. Porter will be the Keynote Speaker at the 25th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Breakfast hosted by The YMCA of Western Monmouth County and The Community YMCA.

“As an organization committed to strengthening community, the Y is honored to continue to host this meaningful memorial to celebrate and reinforce Dr. King’s enduring legacy of service,” said YMCA of Western Monmouth County President and CEO Cynthia Joy.

The annual YMCA event, which honors the legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., will take place Jan. 20, 2014 from 8-10 a.m. at Branches Catering, West Long Branch.

Rhonda Anderson, President & CEO of The Community YMCA, said youth and teens from YMCA programs will play key roles at this year’s celebration to help ensure that“Dr. King’s legacy as a peacemaker and humanitarian carry on to the next generation.”

Pastor Porter has been serving at the historic Pilgrim Baptist Church in Red Bank since May of 2003. He is committed to spreading the gospel throughout the world. He serves as member and instructor with the Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Convention and has led Medical Mission Teams and Mission Work Teams to rural areas of the West Indies. He is currently leading the efforts to support the building of a medical clinic and Christian Church in La Cajou, Haiti.

Pastor Porter is President of the Board of Trustees for the Red Bank Affordable Housing. He has also been appointed to various committees, including Riverview Medical Center Advisory Committee, N.A.A.C.P, Westside Ministerial Alliance and The Executive Committee of the Monmouth County Long Term Recovery Group.

This year’s memorial breakfast will include a food drive to benefit Lunch Break in Red Bank, music, the presentation of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Humanitarian Award, and the winner of an essay contest among YMCA high school participants.

Monmouth County high school students are invited to apply for the Monmouth County Humanitarian Award. The award is given to a student who exemplifies the definition of a humanitarian and conveys the YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. High school students participating in programs at The Community YMCA or the Western Monmouth County YMCA are encouraged to enter the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. essay contest.
