Budget Season Returns to Howell

Meetings and more for residents this week

With municipal offices and schools closed on Monday for President's Day there will still be plenty to do in the township this week.

On Tuesday night at 7:30 the Town Council will hold its second meeting of the month at Town Hall. In addition to the regular township business the council will also take time tomorrow night to recognize the Howell AYFC Rebel Cheerleaders who recently won the national championship in their age group.

There will also be a public hearing on an ordinance that would ban signs using "red, amber or green lights," within 100 feet of a light controlled intersection among other requirements.

The council is also scheduled to introduce an ordinance relating to property maintenance in the township. The ordinance has brought some heated discussion in its early stages. The major points of contention have been the storage of boats and trailers in the side or rear yards of people's properties.

Another question that has been raised is a provision that would the number of commercial vehicles that can be parked at a location to one.

There is also a program that could be of interest to parents in the district on Tuesday night at Middle School North. Starting at 6:30 there will be a presentation on New Jersey's Anti-Bullying Law presented by Jeanna Corrigan, the district's anti bullying coordinator and Sgt. Chris Hill of the Howell Township Police Department. Hill's presentation will focus more on cyber bullying.

After having their first meeting of the month cancelled due to weather, the Howell Board of Education will hold a meeting on Wednesday night at Middle School North.

Superintendent Enid Golden is scheduled to give an update on the district's technology task force as part of what figures to be a very busy night for the board.

With the winter sports season winding down an astounding nine members of the Rebel wrestling team will be heading to Toms River North for the Region 6 Tournament. After winning the District 21 title the Rebels will be looking to send at least a few representatives to the state finals in Atlantic City next weekend.

District champions Ben Esposito (120), Cole Cameron (138) and Ashanti Maurice (145) will be off until Friday after earning byes through the first round. 106 pounder Jimmy Slendorn, 160 pounder Zach Bohm and 220 pounder George McCoy will look to join them after taking second in districts. After taking third at Manalapan 152 pounder Joey Schultz, 170 pounder Cody Kirk and 195 pounder Matt Sulkowski will also be fighting to keep their seasons alive for another day.

The township was scheduled to hold its first budget meeting of the year, but according to their website that meeting has been postponed to a yet to be determined date.
