Maj. George Anikow, a member of Howell High School's Class of 1989 was killed in the Phillipines, according a State Department zpokesman.
Anikow, 41, whose wife Laura is an employee at the American Embassy in the Phillipines, received a bachelor's degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1993 before joining the Marines that year and advancing to the rank of major.
According to his obituary, Anikow was serving as an Individual Mobilization Augmentee. He had previously served in Hawaii as well as a nine-month active duty tour in Afghanistan.
The State Department spokesman said the Philippine National Police have suspects in custody in relation to Anikow's Nov. 24 death. "The U.S. Embassy in Manila appreciates the cooperation of the philippine authorities, and will work closely with the PNP in their investigation," said the State Department Spokesperson who declined to give their name.
A story in The Daily Mail said Anikow was killed during a fight in front of "an exclusive compound," in Manila. Four men were reportedly denied access to the facility which lead to the fight.
According to the story the men were quickly arrested following the fight.
