Middle School South to Host 5K Saturday Morning

Event to benefit Howell Township Education Foundation

With nothing but sunshine in the forecast for Saturday the field at Middle School South will come alive with the second annual Race to Educate 5K Race/Walk.

For those brave enough to take on the challenge, registration will start at 7:30 with the starting gun going off at 9 a.m. The race itself is being held by the Howell Township Education Foundation, in conjunction with the Freehold Area Running Club and organizers are hoping it is even more successful than the inaugural run last year. "We had over 150 racers/walkers last year and we hope to surpass that number this year," said Mark Ackermann, the chairperson of the foundation.

Ackermann said the event is something that people can enjoy even if they are not among the runners. "This event not only offers fun for family and friends, or an opportunity for a true racer to test their abilities, but all proceeds collected will benefit the Howell Township School System, which in turn supports the future of our children" he added.

In addition to the race the day will also include an area with entertainment for the spectators. Vendors, a DJ as well as food and beverages are all part of the experience. There will also be a "Family Fun Race," for children 12 and under for those younger competitors in the area.

The stakes are even higher this year for the schools as the foundation is offering a $1000 grant to the school that has the highest percentage of race participants, based on school enrollment. At the time of registration, runners will be given the chance to declare their affiliation to a given school in hopes of helping win the money.
