Shelter Reception Areas Established Ahead of Storm

Residents will be taken by bus to larger facilities

The Howell Police Department announced on Sunday afternoon that three reception centers will be established for those looking for shelter during Hurricane Sandy.

The reception centers will open as of 3 p.m. on Sunday at the Adelphia Fire Department Substation on Route 33, the Southard Fire House at Route 9 and New Friendship Road and the Ramtown Fire Station at 88 Ramtown Greenville Road.

According to the department, from those locations residents will be taken to one of the shelters being established across the county. "The only way you will be transported to the shelters is through the reception centers," the department said on its Facebook page.

For those residents with pets at least one shelter will allow pets but they must be kenneled, have their immunization paperwork as well as food and water.

Those residents seeking shelter are asked to bring medication, enough food for three days and their own sleeping bags. Residents are also encouraged to arrive at the center early as "once weather conditions become dangerous the Office of Emergency Management will cease providing transportation," the department announced.
