St. Veronica's Pastor Credits Pope Following Resignation

Following historic decision

When he heard the announcement that Pope Benedict XVI intends to resign at the end of the month Father Vincent Euk of St. Veronica's said he was not surprised by the decision.

Euk said he had seen an interview with the Pope where he said he would not resign from the office in a time of trouble but rather when he physically could not carry on the duties. That interview proved to be correct with Pope Benedict citing those very reasons for being the first pope in centuries to step down.

Father Euk also said he was also impressed by how Pope Benedict went about his resignation. "What I find kind of interesting is his humility in recognizing he can't go on," he said. "When you look at a lot of people in our own times when they're getting older they don't want to give up. Here's a man that sees that he's running into probably health issues and he's humble enough to do it."

When he first became a priest Father Euk said he saw then Cardinal Ratzinger at St. Joseph's Seminary in New York. He said other people in attendance were surprised by what they saw. "They were shocked because they were trying to portray him as the hatchet man for the Vatican," he said. "His demeanor was so humble and quiet. It shocked everybody that he was that way."
