B-24 Print to honor BG James Young, Wed, Dec 4th, JB-MDL

The NJ Air Force Association will present a Keith Ferris B-24
print to the JB-MDL Library in honor of BGen James E. Young, ANG, ret., Howell,
NJ, who flew 44 WWII B-17/24 combat missions. He was awarded the Distinguished

Flying Cross and the Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters.

 Upon leaving the Army Air Force (AAF) in October 1946, hejoined the Air National Guard at Newark Airport, NJ, before being recalled to active duty in support of the Korean War, 1951-52, and the Berlin Crisis 1961-62. 


He returned to the ANG 170th Military Airlift Group and flew missions during the Vietnam Conflict and later as the Deputy Commander helped make the unit transfer from Newark Airport to McGuire AFB in June of 1965. Further, he served as Commander of the ANG 170th Military Airlift Group at McGuire AFB beginning Aug 1, 1967.


During his Command on April 1, 1977, the unit transitioned from the piston engined C-121 Lockheed Constellations and C-7 Caribous to the KC-135 jet Strato-Tankers. It was then renamed the 170th Air Refueling Group and flew in support of many USAF commands including the Strategic Air Command (SAC). He served as the 170th ARG Commander until Aug. 1, 1979. At one point it was authorized 109 officers and 811 enlisted personnel. 

In April 1979, he was promoted to BGen and assigned as the Assistant Adjutant General for Air, NJ Dept of Defense, HQ NJ ANG, McGuire AFB,NJ.  He retired from the Air National Guard in 1980 after 39 years of service.

requested before 1:00 PM.

For civilians, they should plan on arriving at least 30 minutes early at the Welcome Center. Then call the main Library number, 609-754-2079, and have someone either escort them  or give them temporary access for the event. They will also need a picture ID and/or drivers license or social security number.
