GCU’s McAuley Institute Offers Members Historical and Future Perspectives on Terrorism and Homeland Security

Georgian Court University's McAuley Institute for Lifelong Learning (MILL) offers members a free class, Terrorism & Homeland Security in New Jersey: Past, Present & Future.

With terrorism and homeland security continually in the headlines, Georgian Court University’s McAuley Institute for Lifelong Learning (MILL) offers members a free class, Terrorism & Homeland Security in New Jersey: Past, Present & Future, on Tuesday, May 7, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. The member-exclusive class is one of seven free classes offered this spring to members of the institute.

The class is also just one of more than 25 courses and programs for adults ages 50 and above offered by the MILL program in the Spring 2013 semester. Combining social interaction and learning without tests or homework, MILL offers social events for members and courses in subjects ranging from golf, T’ai Chi Chih®, and holistic home remedies to rose cultivation, Einstein, and the Korean War. Annual membership is just $25.

Join other MILL members to hear historical information about New Jersey’s experiences with terrorism and approach to homeland security from local expert, Robert J. Louden, Ph.D., GCU professor and director of the criminal justice and homeland security programs. Dr. Louden will lead a discussion on the topic of local terroristic events and the impact that these events have had on our state and community

Dr. Louden spent 21 years in the New York City Police Department, including serving as commanding officer of the Hostage Negotiating Team and chief hostage negotiator. He was also a supervisor on the Kidnap Task Force and commander of the Detective Squad. He is a member of the Honor Legion of the New York City Police Department as well as the Honor Legion of the Police Departments of the State of New Jersey.

In 1993, he was appointed by the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of the Treasury to provide recommendations on how federal law enforcement should handle complex hostage situations. He has also worked closely with the FBI, the U.S. State Department, the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, and the U.S. Attorney General’s Office.

Dr. Louden has lectured throughout the United States, as well as in England, Turkey, Jamaica, Canada, Russia, Ireland and at the International Law Enforcement Academy in Budapest, Hungary. He is a contributor to a FEMA textbook, and has presented at a NATO conference on terrorism-related issues. He has appeared dozens of times on U.S. and international television and radio broadcasts, as well as in numerous newspapers and magazines as an expert on hostage situations and terrorism.
