Food Drive Starts This Weekend at Wal-Mart

Event looks to benefit local residents

With summer over, the holiday season is right around the corner and organizations like the Howell Food Pantry will be called upon to help put food on the tables of local residents during the most festive time of the year.

In an effort to help keep the pantry's shelves full leading up to the holidays Wal-Mart will be holding a food drive starting on Saturday as they prepare for the grand re-opening of their expanded store.

Anna Ornstein, one of the organizers of the event, said this year's food drive will be a little different than ones held in the past. "Wal-Mart will be posting announcements throughout the store for a place (or places) to drop donations which can be purchased within the store," she said.

As the store expands to include more food items Ornstein said she hopes people will take the opportunity to help out those residents in need. She said she hopes by the time the week is done they will be able to fill a large truck with the items donated and bring it to the pantry.

Ornstein said donations of all sizes from a handful of items to a truck full can make a big difference for the pantry. "The common thought is that it would not make a difference because it would be so small in the big picture," she said. "If we all changed our mindset and each donated a little, we would have a lot."
