For four years Girl Scouts from Monmouth and Ocean Counties have been spending some of their time on a project to help the men and women serving overseas.
This year the girls, including troops from Howell donated 1,792 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to American Recreational Military Services (ARMS). The project was done in conjunction with the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore Gift of Caring program.
The girls involved in the project included Steffanie Rosko from Troop 1190 as well as Stephanie Hood, Sarah Jones and Rachel Russo from Troop 1002. Working together they collected, sorted and packed the cookies before bringing them to the Toms River Armory. From Ocean County the treats will then be shipped to members of the armed forces all across the globe.
For the people that receive the cookies AMRS Secretary Elena Mahoney said they are definitely appreciated. "Our soldiers repeatedly tell us how much they look forward to receiving our packages because it is reminiscent of opening presents, and in fact lets them know people back home care, and that they are not forgotten," she said.
Mahoney said it is not only that they are receiving the presents, but also what they are getting that makes it extra special. "Nothing says 'home' more than Girl Scout cookies," she added.
