It's not what you DID, it's what you ACHIEVED

Often when a person comes to me for a resume makeover, I find that their current document is filled with tasks and severely lacking in accomplishments.

Often when a person comes to me for a resume makeover, I find that their current document is filled with tasks and severely lacking in accomplishments. Employers are not looking to see what you have done.  They want to know what you have achieved. The best indicator of what you can do for a potential employer is what you have already done, and how well you did it! It is important to tell your full story. CAR – What were your Challenges? What Action steps did you take in response to those challenges? What were the Results and the impact that you had on the organization?

Here are some questions to help you come up with your accomplishments and fill your resume with content that is rich and meaningful: 

1.     What is unique about how you do your job?

2.     What does your current boss praise you for?

3.     Do you have quotas or goals in your current position? How are you able to meet or exceed them?

4.     Why were you hired and did you meet your employer’s expectations?

5.     If you were you rewarded with additional responsibilities, what was the outcome?

6.     What have you done to improve customer relationships with the company?

7.     Have you done anything to improve communications, either internally or externally?

8.     What teams have you been part of?

9.     What are you most proud of?

10.  What would your co-workers say about you?

11.  What do you enjoy the most?

12.  How did you take initiative in your position?

13.  What special projects have you worked on?

14.  How did you set yourself apart?

15.  How did you go above and beyond what was required?

16.  What have you done to increase your responsibilities in your current job

17.  Which of your accomplishments are you most proud of?

Make sure you résumé is not just a laundry list of tasks. Show a complete picture of what you accomplished, not a bunch of isolated puzzle pieces. You can make your résumé memorable by showing context, challenges, actions, and results –all tightly edited.
