Former UK Army Paratrooper Dies at 84

Visitation for Joseph Cassidy of Howell is at the George S. Hassler Funeral Home in Jackson with a funeral service at St. Veronica.

Joseph Cassidy, 84, of Howell passed away on Tuesday at CentraState Medical Center in Freehold.

Cassidy was born in Clydebank, Scotland and lived in Port Glasgow, Scotland before settling in Brooklyn in 1962, according to his obituary on Legacy.com. He was employed as a painter for the United Nations in New York City for 11.

Cassidy served in The United Kingdom Army as a paratrooper and was a communicant of the Church of St. Veronica in Howell, his obituary says.

He was predeceased by his parents, James and Agnes Cassidy. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Alice (nee O'Neill) Cassidy; his sons, John Cassidy of Swiftwater, PA, and Joseph Cassidy and his wife, Cathy of Washingtonville, NY; his daughters, Bridget Hyland and her husband, Mike of Howell, Patricia Dodrill and her husband, Henry of Howell, Agnes Harakal and her husband, Glenn of Eagle, CO, and Morag Small and her husband, Robert of Jackson; his 17 grandchildren; his 5 great-grandchildren; and his family in the United Kingdom.

Visitation is 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the George S. Hassler Funeral Home, 980 Bennetts Mills Rd., Jackson. A funeral will be 8 a.m. Friday, June 14 at the funeral home. A liturgy will follow at 9 a.m. at the Church of St. Veronica, 4215 Route 9 North, Howell. Interment to follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, 1 Honey Locust Dr., Lakewood.
