Howell Resident, a Former Police Officer, Dies at 61

Gary Alan Ascough served in the Manalapan Township Police Department for 27 years.

Gary Alan Ascough, 61, of Howell Township passed away at home on Friday, February 28, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer.  Gary was a lifelong resident of Howell Township and was the son of Arthur and Gladys (nee Patterson) Ascough.  Serving Manalapan Township for twenty-seven years as a police officer, he retired in 2000.  During his career, Gary was recognized numerous times as an expert shot.  In retirement, he worked for Dunlop and Lisk, Matawan.  Gary enjoyed spending time at the range with his sons and daughter, was a woodworker and a skillful freshwater fisherman.  He found pleasure being outdoors, but his love was for his wife, children, and most of all, his granddaughter.

Gary was predeceased by his wife, Mary in 2012.  He is survived by his two sons, Gary Michael Ascough and his wife, Jamie and Matthew Alan Ascough both of Howell; a daughter, Julia H. Morcom and her husband, Craig of Avon; his granddaughter, Makayla; and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend his 11:00 AM Funeral Service at the funeral home on Thursday, March 6, 2014.  Interment to follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Farmingdale.  For those who desire, memorial contributions in Gary's name may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS, 66675.  For information, directions or condolence messages to the family, visit www.claytonfuneralhome.com.
