Obituary: George A. Matthews, 77

Former Director of Public Works Department

George A. Matthews, 77, of Howell passed away surrounded by his family on Sunday, November 11, 2012 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. 

George was a lifelong Howell resident. He was the director of the Public Works Department in Howell Township for 39 years retiring in 1996. George was a life member of the Adelphia Fire Department for the past 55 years and serviced as Chief in 1969. He was a member of the Ironside Gun Club, Lacey.

George was predeceased by a son, George F. Matthews in 1996; a brother; and two sisters.  He is survived by his wife, Janet Matthews; a son, Gregg L. Matthews of Howell; a daughter, Donna Matthews of Media, PA; two stepdaughters, JoAnn Murphy of Farmingdale and Linda Haase of Howell; two stepsons, Mybon Layton of Matawan and Robert Layton of Morgantown, WV; seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 from 2:00 to 4:00 & 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his 11:00 AM funeral service at the funeral home on Thursday, November 15, 2012 with Rev. William Frederickson, officiating. 

Interment to follow in Adelphia Cemetery, Adelphia.
