Letter: Howell, Help Our Seniors, Not Just Our Kids

This town has lots to offer. You see all the articles, blogs, etc. on keeping our kids out of trouble and away from drugs; needing new uniforms, equipment, different sports interest, etc.

But, when's the last time you heard about doing something fun and donating some of our tax $$ to our seniors??

For years, they lived in Howell and paid all the school taxes (and financial obligations and donations)  whether they had kids or not. But, the most we offer is our Senior Ctr. which each year gets limited funds from the township.

Sadly, those seniors who are alone especially don't/can't drive get a bus to the Senior Ctr. Then back home, and spend most of their empty time there.

Yes, the ladies who work hard there do what they can and offer what they can but to get funding for more than one or two outside events or bus trips outside of Howell each year, never seen to be granted; what they get is excuses from younger residents, especially parents who want their kids taken care of.

What about the older  mom, dad, aunt, uncle and grandparents who are now all alone?? Wouldn't you think they'd like to get out and see places of interest, besides a trip to the reservoir or boardwalk? Can this fairly be all we offer them??? Wouldn't you like to go to more than one live entertainment show each year?

Seniors paid their dues by spending their money for your kids but what about reciprocating to them in their golden years while they are still healthy enough to get out and around??

And, the food they pay for lunch especially, is very fair. Go down some week and try it..you'd request more bidding services for decent meals if you ate some of it...i know, i've been there.

Carole Zur and her staff are wonderful and try their best but money is not forthcoming to help out more. Can't the kids go a little longer without new equipment and uniforms for another year or so? The kids will be here for awhile; our senior community has limited time to enjoy their golden years.
