Billboard Announces New Initiative by Local Police Force

Program to focus on DWI dangers

This holiday season there will be countless motorists driving through Howell and the local police department will be doing its part to make sure they do so safely.

The Howell Township Police Department announced they will be increasing their efforts to crack down on those motorists who drive while intoxicated. "The message is simple, drinking alcohol and driving do not mix," said Sgt. Joseph Markulic of the traffic safety division.

As a reminder to drivers of the importance of driving safely Markulic and dispatcher Evan Keats designed a billboard which can be seen near the intersection of Route 9 and White Street.

Markulic said that driving while intoxicated can risk the lives of not only the drivers themselves but also of those around them. That is especially true during the holiday season. "We know that the holiday season can be one of the deadliest and most dangerous times on America's roadways due to drunk driving," Markulic said. "Taking a risk on having your 2011 end in an arrest or death is just not worth it."

In 2009 there were 753 people killed in crashes where drivers or motorcycle riders had a blood alcohol level of .08 or higher according to Markulic.

To avoid being in a dangerous situation, Markulic had several suggestions to help people. That includes planning safe ways to get home including having a designated driver or calling a cab or a friend or family member prior to heading out for the night.

Drivers are also encouraged to contact the police if they see someone they believe may be driving under the influence. The program is called "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over," and Markulic said that is a valuable lesson for everyone. "If you know someone who is about to drive or ride with a driver who is impaired, take the driver's keys and help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely," Markulic said.

Markulic said the sign space was donated by Kevin Burke, the owner of Outdoor Media Systems LLC.
