Cranbury Township Man, 27, Dies At I-195 Accident Scene After Being Ejected

Driver apparently lost control traveling eastbound, ended up in westbound lanes, police said.

A 27-year-old Cranbury Township man died from injuries he suffered after being ejected from his motor vehicle in a 10:48 a.m. accident on I-195 at the Jackson/Howell Township border today.

Carl Henninger was traveling eastbound in a Chevy Lumina when he apparently lost control, ran off the left side of the center median and struck another vehicle on the westbound side, State Police Spokesman Sgt. Adam Grossman said.

Henninger was pronounced deceased at the scene, said Grossman.

The driver of the vehicle struck by Henninger, Jennifer, Balka, 22, of Wall Township, was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, with minor injuries, police said. No further information was available as to Balka's condition.

Balka was driving a Buick Century.

The accident occurred at milemaker 23.8.

All lanes on I-195 westbound east of exit 22 - CR 638 in Jackson Township near the exit for Route 9 in Howell Township were closed for approximately four hours during the accident investigation.

The incident wreaked havoc with traffic on Route 9 in Howell Township as well, eyewitnesses report.

Investigating are the Hamilton station NJ state trooper fatal accident team, along with the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.

JD don't point the finger and act like u don't do anything wrong, I don't know you although I'm sure u do something wrong in your life. "Don't throw stones if u live in a glass house."

God Bless this young man and his family/friends. Regardless of the facts here, this road is one of the worst for people speeding. I don't understand what the hurry is.
Leslie Bianczik January 13, 2013 at 02:08 PM
JD, that commenter also said the car was a Kia. Don't believe everything you read on the internet.

My heart goes out to the Henninger family during their difficult loss. I do find it in poor taste to go on a rant about speeding or not using a seat belt at this time. Yes, we all know the rules of safety, but right now it's time to morn the loss of a young man's life, and pray for his family who are grieving.
JD January 13, 2013 at 05:43 PM
Ralph, The best thing you and others can do is go out and promote seatbelt safety and obeying the speed limits. Kudos if you do. Just like MADD... Mothers Against Drunk Drivers promote awareness of consequences of driving while drunk or DUI.

My heart goes out to the Henninger family, especially my dear friend and brother Ralph, we are deeply saddened by this tragic news! As for JD you heartless comments only serve to bring a swift and desisive slap in you face by charma, cause you too will feel charmas wrath as it will be upon your heartless sole soon, this disrespect you have directed to those of us grieving will not come without a price! JD u are heartless. And so u kno this, a seatbelt can also take a life as quick as it can save one. Just like an airbag... airbag in my rsx has been disabled cuz I believe an airbag does more damage than good, especially on short ppl like myself. * my heart goes out to the family of Carl* every day that goes by from here is going to be hard. I pray u all keep a sound mind and console eachother's heart at this time oxoxox
DennyD January 14, 2013 at 02:15 PM
The number one cause of death in motor vehicle accidents is ejection from the vehicle. Seatbelts are a must. Your second sentence is 100% inaccurate.
Margie January 14, 2013 at 04:17 PM
There have been deaths due to seatbelts.. and accidents caused by seatbelts. Coming off 195 on the ramps as u try to look for oncomin traffic the seatbelt locks and can't manuver enough to see behind to the left. Mirrors don't see everything
J January 14, 2013 at 07:46 PM

David Chennells January 16, 2013 at 04:33 AM
Sorry for your loss
Callie January 17, 2013 at 06:36 PM
I think it is safe to say that for every injury or death caused by a seatbelt or airbag, there are far more lives saved. As for the on-ramps themselves, it comes down more to the lack of courtesy and common sense of those already driving on the highway and those entering/exiting the highway.
Irene Gallo May 04, 2013 at 06:27 PM
My husband and I purchased appliances from Carl a few months back. I found out today that he passed. He was a good kid, I don't think he had a mean bone in his body. My deepest condolences to all that loved him, I will always remember him fondly. Irene
