Crash Closes Herbertsville Rd. for Several Hours

One seriously injured in Thursday accident

An accident at the intersection of Herbertsville Rd. and Newtons Corner Rd. left one driver with a broken leg and the roadway shut for more than three hours. 

Sgt. Joseph Markulic of the reported that at around 1:30 on Thursday afternoon 43-year-old Richard Petro of Trenton was driving a 2000 Mack Dump Truck southbound on Herbertsville Rd. Natalie Williams, 28, of Browns Mills Rd. was driving northbound on Newtowns Corner Rd. and reportedly did not stop at the stop sign.

Petro reportedly attempted to brake at which time he swerved left with his rear axle going over Williams' hood. Markulic said his truck then went off the road and hit several trees before coming to a stop on its side.

Following the accident Williams was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for minor injuries including back and neck pain. Petro, Markulic said, was trapped in the cabin of his truck for close to 10 minutes before the Ramtown Fire Department helped to get him out. He was taken by the Brick Police Department EMS unit to Jersey Shore as well for a fractured leg and multiple abrasions. 

The Monmouth County Road Department and Taylors Towing worked to clear the road which opened three hours after the accident occurred. Williams was issued a summons for a stop sign violation as a result of the accident.

Other units responding to the scene included the Herbertsville Fire Department, the Monmouth County Highway Traffic Safety Department  and Shade Tree Commission as well as the New Jersey State Police Commercial Vehicle Inspection Team. The Howell Office of Emergency Management and Monmouth County Hazmat Team also responded to the scene.
