Ford Road Residents Help With Arrest

Suspect had previous arrests

Last Friday night officers from the Howell Police Department were called to a house on Ford Road that ended with a Howell resident being arrested on several charges including burglary, theft and resisting arrest.

Detective Sgt. Eileen Dodd of the department reported that a resident told police that a man had come to their house and asked for a girl who he said he had met online. When told that there was no such girl, the man, later identified as 22-year-old Carl Koyi Jr. of Spruce Street apologized and left. Dodd said another Ford Road resident had called police at the same time about a man who was climbing through a neighbor's window.

As a result of the calls Dodd said Sgt. Tom Rizzo as well as officers Nick Bondarew, Jack Headley and Pete Kuppler set up a perimeter around the house. Bondarew also had the department's K-9 officer Jago with him, and when Koyi did not respond to the officers, Jago was sent into the house where he found the suspect under a bed.

When Koyi continued to disobey the officers Jago was released to get him at which point Sgt. Rizzo was able to pull him out from under the bed, according to Dodd. The struggle continued after he was taken out by Rizzo and as a result he suffered cuts for which he received treatment from the Howell First Aid Squad. While his cuts were cleaned, Koyi reportedly refused any further medical treatment.

Dodd said that while Koyi was being treated two residents told Headley that a man matching Koyi's description was seen walking around their house and was knocking on the doors and windows. Although they did not answer the door, the residents reported seeing the man identified as Koyi leaving their open garage door.
