Galloway Man Indicted in Connection With Accident That Killed an Atlantic City Man in a Wheelchair

A grand jury indicted Leo Strazzeri for leaving the scene of the fatal accident.

A Galloway man has been indicted for the leaving the scene of an accident that left an Atlantic City man, who was using a motorized wheelchair to cross the street, dead last summer, Acting Atlantic County Prosecutor James P. McClain announced Wednesday morning, Feb. 20.

Leo Strazzeri, 42, was charged with second-degree leaving the scene of a fatal accident in connection with an accident that resulted in the death of 45-year-old Daniel Tavarez, McClain said.

On July 9, 2012, Tavarez was attempting to cross the street via crosswalk in a motorized wheelchair at Route 30 and Pennsylvania Avenue when he was struck and killed by a vehicle being driven by Strazzeri, McClain said. According to McClain, Strazzeri then left the scene.

Tavarez was pronounced dead at the scene with an autopsy later attributing his cause of death to multiple traumatic injuries, McClain said. Police later found Strazzeri's vehicle unoccupied in Atlantic City, McClain said.

Strazzeri was issued multiple motor vehicle violations, including leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident, careless driving, failure to exhibit driver's license, failure to exhibit registration, uninsured motorist and reckless driving.

McClain authorized the additional charge of second-degree leaving the scene of a fatal accident following an investigation conducted by the Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Collisions Unit and the Atlantic City Police Department Accident Bureau.
