Howell Businesses Damaged in Shopping Plaza Fire

Although no one was injured, the fire destroyed one business, harmed others, and forced them to close temporarily.

At approximately 3:43pm yesterday, a fire started at Colonial Coffee Shoppe in the Aldrich Shopping Plaza.

Southard Fire Department arrived first, and had to break down the rear door of the coffee shop in order to enter. The coffee shop had been closed since 3:00pm. The fire was under control within 45 minutes.

"The fire started in the Colonial Coffee Shop and Spread to Red Moon and China Moon, located on either side," Southard Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Daniel Ryan told the Asbury Park Press.

Walgreens, Howell Medical Pavilion, Art Beins Karate, Landmark Cleaners, China Moon Restaurant, Red Moon Restaurant and Pizza, Asian Harbor, Spare Pair Vision and Remax Realty were all affected by the fire and its smoke.

“I couldn’t even see in because it [the coffee shop] was so filled with smoke,” Larry Mesimer, who works at Art Beins Karate, told the Star-Ledger.

Additional reports say that nearly 100 people were forced to evacuate the plaza, and that many businesses had to close early. Colonial Coffee Shoppe will need to be completely rebuilt.

My family and I are regular customers and close friends of the Savvis and DeLisio families, the owners of Colonial Coffee Shoppe. We were there yesterday after the fire and I dropped everything this morning to go and offer any assistance that I could. I am asking all of Howell to show their support for the Savvises and Delisios as well as the owners of China Moon and Red Moon restaurants. There is a sheet of plywood covering the front door and window of the coffee shop. Please, if you have any compassion and especially if you are friends, customers or Howell residents, write some words of encouragement and compassion. These people are hard working, good people. My family and I have been residents of Howell for 15 years - and that is how long we have been patrons. The Savvises and Delisios have operated the coffee shop for the last 9, almost 10 years.

To let everyone know, the owners of the coffee shop will continue to sell NJ Transit bus tickets from ReMax Relators in Aldrich Plaza.

So what was it that started the fire--a greasy spoon?

What's the matter Lucretia - Are you too STUPID to reply??

YOU have a lot of gall blaming the fire on a greasy spoon. YOU are an idiot!!!! YOU don't know how the fire started and YOU don't know the family who owns and operates the coffee shop or YOU wouldn't be making the stupid remark that YOU did!!!
