Howell Police Dept. Website Hacked

Network was not breached, police say. The hackers only defaced the homepage.

A news release written by the Howell Police Dept.

On April 4, 2014, the Howell Township Police Department website had an unauthorized  intrusion and the content was defaced. There was no data breach, but our home page was  replaced with another home page stating that the website was hacked by Evil-HearT.

We were able to determine that there was no breach into our network, just the actual website homepage. An executable PHP file was uploaded, which essentially is a "hacker toolkit" that allowed the hacker to deface our webpage. Two of the suspects IP addresses were captured during the intrusion. Both IP addresses are registered to a Saudi Arabian Internet Company.

We are in the process of rectifying the situation. Any important information is being posted on our Howell Township Police Telecommunications 911 Facebook page
