Dodd said when they arrived at the scene they saw fire and smoke coming from the back of the house and the roof. At that time the homeowner, 69-year-old James Wu was located in the side yard of the house.

The Southard Fire Department was the first to arrive but was quickly joined by Squankum, Adelphia, Ramtown and Freewood Acres houses as well as a contingent from Jackson and the Howell First Aid Squad.

Wu told the responding officers that he had a wood-burning heater on and believed styrofoam planters had caught fire leading to the blaze. Mr. Wu was not injured in the fire, however he was transported to Kimball Medical Center for evaluation.

The Howell Fire Bureau investigated and ruled the cause of the fire to be accidental.
