Special Agent Accidentally Shoots Himself at Police Academy Gun Range

Transported to Jersey Shore for treatment of a gunshot wound to the foot.

Update, 3:10 p.m.: Bill Quinn, a spokesman for the New Jersey Treasury Department identified the Special Agent Trainee as Steven Raimondo who had worked as a civil investigator with the Division of Taxation for 12 years. Quinn said Raimondo began training for his new position four months ago.

Quinn said Raimondo is expected to recover from his injuries and be able to return to work.

Update, 1:45 p.m.: An initial report by the Howell Police Department indicated the individual shot was a recruit. Subsequent information from the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office stated the man was a special agent.

A special agent of the New Jersey Department of Treasury is being treated at a local hospital after accidentally shooting himself during training at the Monmouth County Police Academy Firearms Training Facility.

Capt. Andy Kudrick of the Howell Police Department said the 41-year-old man was taking part in firearms familiarization training when his firearm discharged. A press release from the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office said the gun was a 9mm handgun.

According to the press release there were two shooters and two instructors on the range at the time of the incident. An EMT was also on the scene and responded to the incident.

The man was then taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center where he was treated for what is believed to be a non life threatening a gunshot wound to the left foot.

The incident is being investigated by the Howell Police Department and the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office.

What a maroon
Jackie Everitt January 24, 2013 at 06:56 pm
Since I read somewhere else that the injuries are minor I would like to say this " I love when I can LMAO over a shooting story"!
Duane January 24, 2013 at 06:58 pm
Great - now cops will be banned from having guns
Tom January 24, 2013 at 07:03 pm
Thats to bad, but it's a good thing it happened during "TRAINING" and not in the field.
Maureen Fitzgerald January 24, 2013 at 07:03 pm
Not a moron necessarily. I've seen a lot of veteran police officers do the same thing (and yes, it was laughable once determined no one was seriously hurt). Guns are serious business.
Richard January 24, 2013 at 07:10 pm
He is very "special"

*facepalm*

Statistically, this will be recorded as a firearm related injury. These statistics are in turn used to bolster the arguments for more gun control laws. Law enforcement is always excluded from gun control laws. Pretty convoluted.

"41-year-old man was taking part in firearms familiarization training when his firearm discharged." This guy is no kid. At age 41 and in a position as Special Agent in the Taxation Dept. you would expect him to be smart enough not to be pulling the trigger or even have his finger on the tripper___while he is pointing it at anything other than a target at the range. Thank God he was pointing i at his own foot when it discharged and not at anyone else.

A maroon? I don't think so. Haematic, perhaps.
AJM January 24, 2013 at 11:25 pm
Definitely a MAROON! Exactly what sal said! First thing that you are taught is to not touch the trigger and now this careless person will be as Ray said another gunshot statistic. Maybe he needs a new line if work? Perhaps on Obamas cabinet where nobody else knows what they are doing either... Wait at least he hurt himself while Cap Hill is KILLING US!

If you have ever handled a gun you would now how it could happen. Have to feel for the guy, he must feel like an idiot. No need to rub it in....

Perhaps he has been watching Barney Fife's (sp) marksmanship on the Mayberry reruns?
marcia January 25, 2013 at 04:28 pm
He WAS pointing the gun DOWN when not in use which IS protocol, especially when reloading for his next round of shooting. It is POSSIBLE that THE GUN malfunctioned too!!! I have seen several automatics misfire w/o causing an harm (thank G-d) for no apparent reason other than a problem with the firearm. Before we place blame, let's hear the ENTIRE story!
Karenk January 25, 2013 at 07:57 pm
Why are there ten times more
Posts about this article and hardly any about all the breakins drugs and incidences of child luring and exposing themselves roaming this area over the last Year This is the problem. People pay more attention to this nonsense reports and less to real issues.
Curious George January 26, 2013 at 01:52 am
Perhaps if we issued weapons to those targets, they could defend themselves and let the shooters at the range understand what it's like to be shot at...Oh, maybe that's what really happened.
frog wild January 26, 2013 at 10:12 pm
Proper protocol is to point a gun DOWN RANGE, especially when reloading. Proper protocol is never point a gun at ANYTHING you do not want to shoot. So unless he intended to shoot his foot, he was not following any safety protocol I know of. He didn't point the gun down, he pointed the gun at his foot.
Send this maroon to an NRA Basic Pistol class.
donald westinghouse January 27, 2013 at 12:24 pm
Exactly. I totally agree. Taking guns away from us as if we are children and the federal mafia government is our mommy and daddy isn't going to solve anything. I know some people that are against gun ownership are sheltered and have never been in a life threatening situation, so they form an opinion of guns based off of how movies portray them as being scary, and they form their opinions based off of illogical feel-good knee-jerk emotionalism, provoked of course by Obama and the media using shootings and children to tug at the emotional heartstrings of people that lack critical thinking.
