UPDATE: Two Injured in 3-Car Crash on Interstate 195

A Cherry Hill man and a West Orange man were injured in the accident, which closed the eastbound lanes from Exit 22 to Exit 28 for two hours

Two men were injured in a three-car crash just before 3 p.m. on Saturday on Interstate 195, when one of the men lost control of his car while trying to avoid debris in the road, state police said.

David Hays, 22, of Cherry Hill was westbound on I-195, near Fort Plains Road in Howell, in a silver Honda Civic when he swerved to avoid debris, according to a preliminary report on the crash, said Trooper Christopher Kay of the Hamilton barracks.

When Hays swerved, he lost control of his car, crossed the median and ended up in the eastbound lanes of 195, where he hit the silver Pontiac Grand Am driven by Matthew Schroeder, 18, of Brick, head on, Kay said.

The impact caused Hays' car to spin 180 degrees into the path of a Hyundai Accent driven by Alexander Delvento, 44, of West Orange. Delvento's car then hit Hays' car in the rear end, Kay said.

Hays and Delvento both were taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, with unspecified injuries, Kay said. Schroeder was not reported to have any injuries, according to the preliminary report, Kay said.

In addition to troopers from the Hamilton barracks, assisting at the scene were the state police Fatal Accident Investigation and Crime Scene units, as well as firefighters, police and EMS from both Howell and Jackson, Kay said. MONOC responded as well.

The accident remains under investigation, Kay said.

 

6:30 p.m. update:

Interstate 195 has been reopened to traffic in both directions but an accident on the highway earlier Saturday afternoon remains under investigation.

4:30 p.m.: An accident on Interstate 195 near Fort Plains Road around 3 p.m. has resulted in the closure of the highway eastbound at exit 22, according to reports.

Initial reports indicate there was a head-on collision at the site. Further details are unavailable at this time.
