Matlosz Court Dedicated in Englishtown
Ceremony commemorating murdered officer took place on the anniversary of his joining the Englishtown Police Department.
Former Howell resident Christopher Matlosz left his mark on the residents he served as member of the Englishtown Police Department. Now, his name will have a permanent place on the town map.
The borough dedicated Matlosz Court in honor of the former Englishtown police officer who was gunned down in the line of duty in Lakewood in January 2011. The road, located off of South Main Street, was renamed Matlosz Court in September and was officially dedicated on Sunday, Oct. 28 in honor of Matlosz’s anniversary joining the Englishtown Police Department.
“During his time here, Chris made lasting friendships, not only with his brothers on the force but with residents and business owners alike,” Lt. Peter Cooke said. “Chris understood our philosophy to work hard and be a proactive police officer, but also find time to talk to the residents. Chris was always out there, patrolling the streets and working hard.”

Matlosz served in the Englishtown Police Department for nearly two years before joining the Lakewood Police Department, which had been a longtime dream of his. Cooke said.
“One of my earliest memories was of Chris saying he wanted to be a Lakewood cop. That dreamed turned into a nightmare when Chris was cut down in his prime by a ruthless murderer,” Cooke said.

Matlosz’s killer, Jahmell Crockam, was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder.
Adam Matlosz, Christopher’s brother, accepted a proclamation for the street dedication on behalf of the family and read a poem composed by a friend of the murdered officer.
“A hero has fallen. His name was Chris. He could light up a room with a smile that will be missed,” the poem read, in part. “We need not fear. Chris’ soul did not die. He only moved his patrol from earth to the sky. It was a joy to know and work with you. I love you, my fallen brother.”
Matlosz started his law enforcement career with the Howell Police Department Explorer's group before serving in several local towns.
