Motor Vehicle Accident Closes Lanes on Route 34 This Morning

Two-vehicle crash leaves one driver in Jersey Shore University Medical Center with serious injuries

A motor vehicle accident in the early morning hours was responsible for closing lanes on both sides of Route 34 in the vicinity of Naval Weapons Station Earle today, leaving one motorist hospitalized with serious injuries, said the Howell Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit.

“On June 16, 2012, at approximately 5:03 a.m., Mary Capasso, 50, of Monroe Township, was operating a large bread box truck and traveling south on Route 34, when she appeared to have fallen asleep,” said Sgt. Joseph Markulic.

At that time, Markulic said that Capasso crossed the center lines and struck a boat on a trailer being carried by 51 year-old Donald Prince of Waretown, who had been proceeding northbound on Route 34.

“After Prince’s vehicle was struck, the boat overturned on the grassy area on the east side of Route 34, and the bread truck embanked off the roadway after striking a tree, leaving Capasso entrapped in the vehicle,” said Markulic.

The Adelphia Fire Department and Earle Naval Weapons Station Fire Department both responded to the accident and extricated Capasso from her vehicle, at which time she was then transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune by the Farmingdale Howell First Aid Squad, for treatment of serious bodily injuries.
