UPDATE: Farmingdale Resident Dies From Injuries in Herbertsville Road Crash

Crash also injured Freehold couple

UPDATE Jan. 26 12:33 p.m.: Jeffrey Smith, 18, of Farmingdale died Friday at 5 p.m. from injuries suffered in a crash on Herbertsville Road the previous day, a spokesperson for the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office confirmed.

Smith was seriously injured and two more were transported to a local hospital following a crash on Herbertsville Road Thursday afternoon.

Ptl. Scott Brooks of the Howell Police Department reported that a little before 3 p.m. Smith was driving a 1997 Toyota Corolla south on Herbertsville Road when he unexplainably crossed the center line near the Circle A Horse Farm.

After crossing the road Smith collided with a 2001 Honda driven by 74-year-old Nicholas Spinelli of Freehold. Also in the car was Spinelli's wife Concetta.

Brooks said following the crash Smith was trapped in his car and sustained "serious head injuries." He was flow to Jersey Shore University Medical Center after being removed by members of the Ramtown and Squankum Fire Departments.

The Spinellis were taken to the same hospital by the Howell First Aid Squad with what Brooks described as "non life threatening injuries."

The crash is being investigated by Brooks and Ptl. William Bommer Jr. as well as the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office and the Serious Crash Analysis Response Team.

Ptl. Brooks said no summonses had been issued at this time.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Howell Police Department at 732-938-4111.

I find it so offensive that an individual would make assumptions in order to slur a young man who has just lost his life, so that that individual can voice in a satirical manner their own position on gun control (totally unrelated to the article). See comment that starts with "i can explain..." My sympathies to both families connected to this accident.

There was no one closer to me than my brother, jeff. Thank you all for your loving comments. He was- and still is- a very unique person. I was pleased to hear all of his friends from school speak about him with such gratitude to have him in their lives. Life really through a curve ball, and it really stabbed us all in the heart. The other couple that were in the accident are very sweet people. Im truly sorry about their position. I am also pleased that they are still able to be held and loved by their family here on earth. I know the family may be experiencing anger, but my brother would throw himself in the way of harm before he would allow anyone else to be hurt. He had a beautiful heart.

Dear RS: I lost my brother suddenly {motorcycle crash} and it knocks the life out of you when you get the horrible news. Do not give any negative comments posted a second thought - some people are ignorant and mean and that will never change. Time will heal your heart - keep you memories close as they will bring a smile to you and tears.
