TELL US: How Can Rt. 9 Become Safer For Pedestrians?

In light of a recent fatal accident on Rt. 9 in Marlboro how do you think the road can become safer for pedestrians?

Two pedestrians were struck last week in Marlboro on Rt. 9, an accident that eventually turned fatal for one.

One man, who succumbed to his injuries hours after the accident, and one woman, who is currently in intensive care, .

Police have not yet released the identities of the victims. The driver was also transported to the hospital, condition unknown.

Rt. 9 runs through multiple towns, including Freehold, and is full of shops and NJ Transit bus stops. At rush hour the road is also full of pedestrians crossing to park and ride stops from the bus.

At night, pedestrians wearing dark clothing crossing the road are often difficult to see. Many use the crosswalk, but some cross between cars stopped at red lights to shorten the distance.

Tell us: Do you think Rt. 9 can benefit from pedestrian improvements? Would more lights along the road at crosswalks work? What ideas do you have?

I totally agree with Bob! In Bergen county, there are bridges for people to walk OVER very busy roads.

This is not a serious question is it?? It is not even safe to drive on Route 9 let alone walk. Maybe stop building more and more on Rt.9 might cut down on traffic but it will never be safe. It's unfortunate it's a speedway full of discourteous drivers.

How many pedestrians have been killed who used the crosswalks and obeyed the walking signs, both of which are plentiful? I would guess VERY FEW! The vast majority of those killed are those who ignore the safety measures provided by the towns. Perhaps the safest way to make Rt. 9 safer is to hold their deaths up as an example of what not to do when you need to cross Rt. 9.

Simple: Enclosed overpasses similar to the ones in NY. They need to be enclosed so the little darlings we spend so much of our RE taxes on don't thrown things on the cars below and cause more deaths. Another observation: So many commuters run to catch their busses in the morning to get to work - perhaps more parking facilities on the North side of 9 would help too. This would eliminate the rush across 9 from the folks who have to park on the South side. They see their busses pullling in and dart across 9 to catch them. It seems most of the fatalities are on the South side in the moning. May they rest in peace. Sad to say nothing will be done. They have been discussing a train to NYC for 113 years now and still no train - taxpayers suffer 2 1/2 hour commutes each way which could be reduced to 1 hour or less.

Put a fence line up on the center of route line and only allow crosswalks at the traffic lights. The police have better things to do than police dumb stupid walkers that try to cross route 9. The police should also be allowed to issue severe jaywlaking summons to the idiots that do it
