UPDATE: Child Still Critical After Thursday Night Crash

One driver charged with DWI

A 6-year-old child who was sent to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of Jersey Shore University Medical Center after a car accident on Thursday is still listed as being in critical condition.

The accident, which occurred on Arnold Boulevard Thursday night, sent several people to the hospital.

According to the Howell Township Police Department, at around 6:49 Thursday night, 43-year-old Bernard Stancheck of Howell was driving a 2000 Chevy Tahoe  west on Arnold Boulevard with Joseph Harmazinski, 41, of Howell as his passenger.

At some point Stancheck crossed into the eastbound lanes, hitting a 2006 Dodge Caravan driven by Esther Wolfson of Lakewood head-on, police said. Also in Wolfson's car were six children ranging from 1- to 8-years-old. 

As a result of the crash, both drivers and six of the children were transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center. Both Stancheck and Wolfson were reportedly in stable condition, and have since been released.

Following an initial investigation of the accident, Stancheck has been charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, operating an unregistered vehicle and failure to wear a seatbelt. More charges could be pending as the investigation continues.

Harmazinski reportedly tried to flee the scene but was eventually arrested on outstanding warrants out of Wall, Lakewood and Jackson. He was treated at Centra State Hospital for his injuries and was turned over to the Jackson Police Department after his discharge.

In addition to the Howell Police Department, several other organizations were also involved at the scene including the Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team, the Ramtown Fire Company, the Howell Police EMS Unit, the Howell First Aid Squad and MONOC paramedics. Mutual aid was also provided by the Lakewood and Hatzola First Aid Squads.
