Turnpike Worker Killed After Being Struck by Howell Driver

A NJ Turnpike maintenance employee retrieving a piece of tire from the roadway on the Turnpike's northbound western spur in Kearny was killed by a Howell driver around 10:25 am. Thursday. 

State Police say Anthony Gallone, 32, of Garfield had stopped his orange 2012 Chevrolet Pickup Truck on the right shoulder with the overhead amber lights illuminated in order to pick up the debris. 

He was struck by a white 2014 Chevrolet box truck, driven by a 20 year old man from Howell and his passenger, a 54 year old man from Long Branch, both of whom were not identified by State Police in their release.

The men were traveling north in the right lane of travel when the car hit Gallone. Gallone was pronounced deceased at the scene at 11:03 a.m.

Assisting at the scene was NJSP Newark Station personnel, NJSP Crime Scene Unit, NJSP Fatal Accident Unit, MONOC ALS, Kearny Twp FAS, and Kearny FD.

This accident is still under investigation and charges have not been filed at this time, according to the NJ State Police.
